AYRSHIRE JUNIOR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Eight clubs to contest season's opener at West Kilbride

Eight clubs will contest the opening event of the Ayrshire Golf Association season, The Ayrshire Junior Team Championships, which takes place at West Kilbride on Sunday the 17th of April.

Royal Troon defend the Matt Lygate Trophy for the best scratch team score with Irvine returning to defend the Andrew D. Nimmo Trophy and the handicap team title.

AYRSHIRE SENIOR MEN'S MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - New trophy for 2022 season

A new trophy will be contested during the 2022 season in Ayrshire, with the introduction of the Ayrshire Senior Men's Matchplay Championship.

The players returning the best eight scratch scores in the Ayrshire Senior Men's Championship, which will take place at Irvine Golf Club on Tuesday the 19th of July, will go forward to the new matchplay event where the competitors will complete the first round and semi final ties before the final, which will be held in mid August at a venue arranged by The Ayrshire Golf Association. 

With the main trophy in the strokeplay round in the Senior Men's Championship going to the player returning the best nett score overall, the introduction of the new matchplay competition, based on scratch scoring, should prove an incentive to lower handicapped players to take part in the Senior's Championship.    

AYRSHIRE SENIOR MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP - Entry forms now available for 2022 event

Entry forms for the 2022 Ayrshire Senior Men's Championship, to be held at Irvine Golf Club on Tuesday the 19th of July, are now available.

The event is open to players who are over 50 years of age on the date of the competition and are members of an Ayrshire Golf Association affiliated club, with a maximum handicap of 36.

The entry fee is £10.

The player returning the best nett score of the day will be the 2022 champion and win the Sandy Provan Trophy.

In addition this year, the players returning the best 8 scratch scores in the competition will go forward to contest the Ayrshire Senior Men's Matchplay Championship.

Entry forms are available through member, or can be downloaded via the appropriate link on the left of the Ayrshire Golf Association web page, under the 'Entry Forms' heading.

Tee times will be allocated by date of receipt of entry, up to the maximum numbers permitted.

AYRSHIRE Vs SOUTH OF SCOTLAND - Boys/Youths team lose out to hosts in annual President's Trophy match

After an absence of two years due to COVID-19, the annual match between the boys and youth teams from Ayrshire and the South of Scotland recommenced on Sunday the 3rd of April 2022, when this year's fixtures was played at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.

Though the Ayrshire team halved the morning foursomes 3 - 3, the hosts regained the President's Trophy with an 8 - 4 win in the afternoon singles, to win the match 11 - 7 overall.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY - Blair Morton wins first tie in 2022 competition

Blair Morton (Royal Troon) is the first player to win a tie in the 2022 Ayrshire Champion of Champions Trophy competition.

Drawn away from home in the first round of this year's event, against Scott  Chesney (Kilbirnie Place), Morton secured his place in round two with a 3 & 2 win.

he now faces a home tie against Andy MacDonald (Auchenharvie 88) or Jake Bunyan (Doon Valley) in the second round.

All first round ties are due to be completed by the 17th of April. 

CLUB COACHING GRANTS - Support scheme in Ayrshire continued in 2022

The club coaching grant scheme in Ayrshire has been continued in 2022, with applications from clubs now invited.

The scheme provides, on application, funding up to £150 per club to assist with the cost of delivering coaching to juniors within member clubs. 

As in previous seasons, clubs can apply for the funding and payment will be made direct to the club nominated coaching professional once he approved coaching within the club has been delivered and a feedback form returned. 

Clubs should note that the level of funding for the scheme is limited, and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The application form for the coaching grant is available to download via the link on the Ayrshire Golf Association web page, under the 'Juniors' heading.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Closing date reminder

Clubs are reminded that the closing date for entries to the 2022 Ayrshire Junior Team Championship is Sunday the 3rd of April.

This year's championship takes place at West Kilbride Golf Club on Sunday the 17th of April

COURSE RATING - Vacancies in Ayrshire for three new rating personnel

The Ayrshire course rating team have vacancies for 3 Course Rating personnel, as the group gear up for a busy season ahead.

The vital service to member clubs is essential to allow clubs to run counting competitions and administer handicaps under the World Handicapping Scheme.

When a golf course is rated, playing length and obstacle factors are evaluated, which allows the unique challenges of each golf course to be quantified. Following this thorough evaluation by a qualified rating team, a Course Rating and Slope Rating is issued for each set of tees. Since Course Rating teams are trained by Scottish Golf (an Authorized Association), each course’s rating is carried out with consistency and accuracy, which is vital to the integrity of the WHS.

A Course Rating represents the expected score for a scratch player (Handicap Index of 0.0) under normal playing conditions, while a Bogey Rating represents the expected score for a bogey player (Handicap Index 20.0 to 24.0). These two figures work together to calculate a Slope Rating, which is a measure of the relative difficulty of a golf course between the scratch player and all other players. In other words, the higher the Slope Rating of a golf course, the more strokes a higher-handicapped player will need to play that course on an equal basis to the scratch player.

By including a unified system for Course Rating under the WHS, a player can use their Handicap Index at any course, in any country, and have a fair and equal game with anyone, from whichever tees they most enjoy.

WEST OF SCOTLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP - Entry now open for boys and girls

Entries are now being accepted for the 2022 West of Scotland Junior Championship, which will be hosted by the Dumbartonshire Golf Union at Hilton park Golf Club on Monday the 27th of June.

Formerly the West of Scotland Boys Championship, this year's event will also include a girls championship, after the six West of Scotland Area Associations agreed to the change, which was introduced after consultation with the West of Scotland Girls Golfing Association who were enthusiastic in their support for the new event.

Open to boys and girls from clubs in Ayrshire, Dumbartonshire, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Stirlingshire and Argyll & Bute. In the first year the event will incorporate two individual 18 hole strokeplay competitions, one for boys and one for girls.

The boys returning the leading eight scratch scores will go on to contest the West of Scotland Boys Matchplay Championship as in previous years and, going forward, the possibility of introducing a similar girls matchplay event will be considered in future years.

IRVINE G.C. Vs AYRSHIRE SELECT - Scratch league champions winn season's opener

The 2021 Ayrshire Scratch League champions opened the season with a win over an Ayrshire select team at Irvine GC on Sunday 20th March.

Two strong teams fought out a close encounter with the host club eventually winning by 3.5 - 2.5.

In the lead tie John Shanks put the hosts ahead with a 5&5 win over Robbie Muir (Kilmarnock Barassie) but a 5&4 win by Craig Telfer (Turnberry) over Greg Cathie leveled the match score at 1-1.

Darren Mallinson edged out Steven Stamper (Turnberry) by a single hole to put the hosts ahead once more and when George Robertson halved with Scott Brown (Turnberry), Irvine were 2.5 - 1.5 ahead with two ties remaining on the course.

In the event, Paul Kennedy was beaten by a single hole by Joe McSorley (Prestwick St Cuthbert) in the anchor tie, whilst his son, 16 year old Ayrshire boys team player Ryan Kennedy, secured the necessary point to give Irvine the overall win in the match when he defeated Barry O'Rourke (Loudoun) by 2 holes.

The next Ayrshire fixture is the annual Boys & Youths Match against the South of Scotland for The President's Trophy, which takes place at Dumfries & Galloway GC on Sunday 3rd April.  

AYRSHIRE SCRATCH LEAGUES - Ayr Dalmilling drop out of Division 3a

Ayr Dalmilling have dropped out of this season's Ayrshire Scratch League Division 3a.

The withdrawal of the north Ayr club from the competition leaves Division 3a to be contested by Ayr Belleisle, Troon St Meddans and Redburn, with the winners going forward to play off with the winners of Division 3b for the Division 3 trophy.

All competing clubs in the Scratch Leagues are reminded to have their agreed fixture dates submitted to the respective league administrators by the end of March.

2022 AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION YEARBOOK - 19th edition launched at Annual Dinner

The 19th edition of the Ayrshire Golf Association Yearbook was launched at the recent Ayrshire Golf Association Annual Dinner, with copies due to be distributed free to member clubs in the coming weeks.

The 32 page yearbook, which was again published locally by AMS in Troon, provides lots of useful information for the forthcoming season, including fixtures and club websites, as well as a review of the successes during the 2021 season and other golf articles.

2022 AYRSHIRE STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Entry forms now available

Entry forms are now available for the 2022 Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship, which will be held at Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club on Sunday the 24th of April.

Handicap limit for the 36 hole scratch event is 3 and entries will be balloted on handicap in the event of an over subscribed entry.

Entry is £20 and can be paid by cheque, cash or bank transfer.

The closing date for entries is Saturday the 9th of April.
