TOP OF THE SCOTS - Calum Nairn takes third place in Scottish Open Strokeplay at Gailes Links

The new Ayrshire Mens Matchplay Champion Calum Nairn (Prestwick St Cuthbert) continued a superb start to the 2026 season following on from his county title and victory last week in the Prestwick Links Championship, when he finished in third place at the weekend in the Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship over the Glasgow Gof Club Gailes Links from the 29th to the 31st of May.

Rounds of 70, 68, 70, and 69 gave Calum a seven under par total of 277, which left him five behind the winner Greg Holmes from England and three behind his final round playing partner Mads Heller from Denmark.

Around the turn in the final round Calum came within two shots of long time leader Holmes but it looked like his championship challenge was fading when he dropped a shot at the eleventh on the way home, only for his hopes to be dramatically reignited with an astonishing eagle three at the par five fourteenth hole.

Having found a bunker on the left from the tee, Calum played a long bunker shot for his second which he pulled left of the fairway, coming to rest in long rough some one hundred and twent yards or so from the hole. Drawing on all his strength and skill Calum's shot from the rough made a great contact and soared towards the green, to be met with souts from spectators as it came to rest against the pin before dropping in for a superb, and much welcomed eagle three. Despite dropping a shot at the sixteenth when he bunkered his tee shot, calum rallied again with a fine birdie three at the penultimate hole, and an excellent up and down over a greenside right bunker at the last for a closing par four to take third spot on the countback over Mads Viemose larsen of Denmark who also finished with a 277 total.

His seven under par total saw Calum finish top Scot in the tournament by a clear seven shots from his other final round playing partner Ollie Blackadder (Deeside).

Calum was the only Ayrshire player to make the cut of 144 (+2) after the second round.

Other Ayrshire scores:-

147 (+5) Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) 74/73
