OPEN CHAMPION REMEMBERED - Memorial to Andrew Strath unveiled in Prestwick

Open Golf Champion Andrew Strath (1836 - 1868) has been honoured with a memorial plaque near his burial place in the Auld Kirk burial ground in Prestwick.

Strath was the only player to challenge the early dominance of Willie Park and Old & Young Tom Morris in The Open Championship, winning the belt in 1865 to become the only person other than Park or the Morris's to have hisname on the belt, before Young Tom made it his property ,with three successive wins, in 1870.

Strath also finished second in The Open Championship in 1864, third in 1860 and fourth in 1863 & 1867.

When Tom Morris left Prestwick to return to St. Andrews in 1865, Andrew Strath succeeded him as keeper of the green at Prestwick, where he died of tuberculosis in 1868, aged 32, and was buried in an unmarked grave in the burial ground of the Auld Kirk, overlooking the present first green of the Prestwick course.

The Prestwick club, having recently became aware that Strath was buried in Prestwick and there was no memorial to mark his grave, commissioned a memorial plaque to be placed, with the agreement of South Ayrshire Council, within the cemetery grounds.

The plaque (pictured right), which is situated near to the entrance to the burial ground lists Strath's achievements and is a fitting memorial to an early Open Champion with lasting Prestwick connections.

BELLEISLE CUP 2008 ... SPONSORED BY SLATER HOGG + HOWIESON

The 2008 Belleisle Cup was won on Sunday 1 June by Paul Gault of the Westerwood Hotel Golf Club.

An (above) capacity field of 77 took part in great morning weather with Graeme Gimson of Prestwick St. Cuthbert leading after a 1 under par 70.

The afternoon rain didn`t affect the scoring and Darren Mallinson of Ravenspark fired a superb 67 to add to his morning 77 to set an early leading total of 144.

As Gimson faded to an afternoon 76, Michael Smyth of Royal Troon shot a second successive level par 71 to move into the lead on 142 but this was bettered by Paul Gault of Westerwood who added a fine 3 under par 68 to his morning 71 for 139 to take the trophy and the £250 1st prize.

Belleisle Golf Club would like to thank everyone who took part, Slater Hogg for their kind sponsorship and Kevin Johnstone and his greenkeeping staff for setting the course up in excellent condition.

SCOTTISH BOYS AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire finish fourth in title defence

The Ayrshire Under 18 Team have failed to emulate last year’s sensational victory by finishing fourth in the 2008 Scottish Boys Area Team Championship played last weekend at Kingsknowe Golf Club in Edinburgh. The four-man team of Scott Brown, Adam Foley, Colin Robinson and Andrew Abercrombie produced a spirited defence and just fell short of a medal place.

In testing, windy conditions, host county Lothians produced two outstanding rounds of 70 in the morning foursomes giving them a crucial five stroke lead over the field going into the afternoon singles. With three of the four singles scores counting, a three round total of 214, giving an overall total of 354, was enough to take the Title by three shots over runners-up Renfrewshire.

The Ayrshire total of 147 in the morning foursomes left them with a mountain to climb in the singles. A singles total of 216 in the afternoon gave an overall totall of 363 and was enough to clinch fourth place behind Perth and Kinross who finished third.

Team Manager David Miller said, “ Although we are disappointed not to repeat last year’s win, the boys gave it everything they had. Home advantage was crucial for Lothians and they took full advantage. All in all, we left a lot of shots out on the course but I think everyone gained valuable experience for the future. Throughout the whole weekend, the boys conducted themselves brilliantly, both on and off the course, and were a credit to Ayrshire”

Ayrshire scores:
Foursomes:
Scott Brown (Turnberry) and Adam Foley (Belleisle) – 72
Colin Robinson (Largs) and Andrew Aberombie (Largs) – 75

Singles:
Andrew Aberombie(Largs) – 71
Adam Foley(Belleilse) – 72
Scott Brown(Turnberry) – 73
Colin Robinson (Largs) – 76

358 - Perth & Kinross (146/212)
