In a field in excess of 100 competitors and playing in the fourth last grouping of the day, 10 handicapper Steven edged a single shot ahead of long time leader James Graham (Alton) to take the trophy for 2026.
26 handicapper James Graham (Alton) won the over 70's age group category by a full five shots from Gordon J Hamilton (Loudoun) with Ian Mackay (Alton) taking the third place voucher by virtue of the better inward half with a nett score of 70.
The 60 - 69 category was won by Gordon Cree (Troon St Meddans), by virtue of the better inward half, ahead of Michael Steel (Ayr Seafield) when both players returned nett scores of 65, while Stewart Currie (Moorpark) finished third with a nett 66.
With Steven Johnston taking the overall title, Ben Cooney (Abbotsford) took top spot in the 50 - 59 age group category, by virtue of the better inward half, ahead of Drew Wilson (Prestwick St Cuthbert) after both players tied on nett 65's, while Colin McGourty (Troon Merchants) was third in the category with a nett score of 66.
The best scratch score of the tournament was an excellent score of 67 returned by Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon), playing in the first group of the day, who was two shots better than Craig Robertson (Turnberry) on 69.
The nearest the pin prize at the 9th was won by Eddie Boyd (West Kilbride) who struck his tee shot to within 25 1/2 inches of the hole, while the nearest the pin prize at the 17th was won by Alan Muir (The Chase) who saw his tee shot strike the pin and come to rest 10 inches from the hole.
At the conclusion of the championship Ayrshire Golf Association Vice President William Fleming (Ballochmyle) thanked Prestwick St Cuthbert Golf Club for hosting the championship, the club and catering staff for theoir consideration and attention during the day, and the competitors for supporting the event, before handing over the Sandy Provan Trophy to the 2026 Ayrshire Senior Men's Champion Steven Johnston.
