AYRSHIRE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Holder Smyth through to quarter finals

The holder of the Ayrshire Matchplay title, Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) - pictured - safely negotiated his first round tie in the 2012 competition, being played this week at Western Gailes, when the opening matches took place on Monday evening, 7th May.

In the first round, Smyth faced another former winner, Steven Murray (Troon Welbeck), and enged into the quarter finals with a 2 & 1 victory.

In the quarter finals, Smyth will face a tough match against Tommy McInally (Loudoun) who booked his place int he last eight with a 4 & 3 win over Stuart Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie)

Newly crowned Strokeplay Champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) came out on top in his tie against his clubmate Del Chamberlain, although the win was a narrow one with the match concluding on the final green.

Wilson now faces former internationalist Steven McEwan (Loudoun) on Tuesday night, after McEwan saw off the challenge of Stephen Spence (Irvine) by 2 & 1

Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Nicholas) was a comfortable 5 & 4 winner over John Shanks (Irvine) and now plays Steven Stamper (Girvan) for a place in the semi final, after Stamper reached the last eight with a 4 & 3 win over John Haggarty (Loudoun).

The other quarter final will be between last years beaten finalist Gary Bryden (Girvan) and David Orchiston (Ballochmyle), after Bryden beat Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) by 3 & 2 and Orchiston had a one hole win over Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) on Monday night.

AYRSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Entry forms now available through clubs

Entry forms for the 2012 Ayrshire Boys Championship, to be held at Largs Golf Club on Thursday 2nd August, were sent to clubs by email last week and should be available through the club secretary.

The closing date for entries to the event is 11th July 2012.

AYRSHIRE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Entry forms distributed

Entry forms for the 2012 Ayrshire Club Championship were distributed to clubs by email last week.

The 2012 competition, for the R.L Crawford Trophy, takes place at Irvine Golf Club on Sunday 15th July.

Ballochmyle (pictured) will be the defending champions after their victory on their home course last year, which they followed with national triumph in the Scottish Club Championship at Falkirk Tryst last September.

Closing date for entries is Saturday 23rd June.

AYRSHIRE FOURBALL - Troon Portland duo into last 16

James McComiskey & Adam Cairns of Troon Portland are the latest pairing to book their place in the last 16 of the 2012 Ayrshire Fourball championship.

In their second round tie at home to Graeme & Alec Reid (Wallacetown), the Portland pair won through by 4 & 3.

McComiskey & Cairns will have a home tie in the third round against either Cameron & Len Ross (Caprington) or David & Iain MacDonald (Largs).

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Kinnell first through to round 3

David Kinnell (Saxone) is the first player through to the last 16 of the 2012 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions competition.

Kinnell had a home tie in round 2 against the 2010 finalist Scott McCahill (Brunston Castle) and won through in a tight match at the first extra hole.

Kinnell now faces another home match, against either Nicol Auld (Whiting Bay) or Jim Anderson (Skelmorlie), in his quest for a quarter final spot.

AYRSHIRE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - 2012 competition kicks off at Western Gailes on Monday

The chase for the 2012 Ayrshire Matchplay Championship title begins at Western Gailes on Monday evening, 7th May, when the eight first round ties are scheduled to take place.

The championship will continue throughout the week with the final scheduled to take place on the evening of Thursday 10th May.

With some of the original qualifiers being unable to take part, a number of reserves have been brought in to the starting line up.

The revised first round schedules are :-

AYRSHIRE LADIES GOLF - County Honorary President in hospital

Hopes that Troon-based centenarian Phyllis Wylie, the oldest surviving Curtis Cup player on either side of the Atlantic, would be well enough to be taken on even a day trip to Nairn during the week of the June 8-10 match against the United States have receded.

Essex-born Phyl (Wade) Wylie, whose husband, a Scot, Surgeon-Capt J L Wylie, died many years ago, lives in a big house opposite the 17th hole at Royal Troon Golf Club. She had a fall recently and is now in hospital.

Ladies Golf Union chief executive and herself a Troon resident, Shona Malcolm said:

"While we would love to have Phyl with us in Nairn, it seems unlikely that she'll be able to make the trip. She is currently in the Biggart Hospital in Prestwick, convalescing after a recent fall in her home.

"She is, however, extremely interested in what's going on and I know some of the ladies from her golf club in Troon were taking her Curtis Cup badges and golf results from last weekend's Helen Holm tournament. Everyone involved in the Curtis Cup wishes Phyl a speedy recovery."

As Phyl Wade she was English champion in 1934 and played in the six-a-side Curtis Cup match of 1938 at Essex County Club, near Boston, Massachusetts - the home club of the Curtis sisters who donated the trophy.

Phyl's GB&I team-mates were Jessie Anderson (Valentine), Helen Holm, Nan Baird, Elsie Corlett and Claire Tiernan.

GB&I led 2 1/2-1/2 at the end of the first day but lost five of the six singles on the secodn day and the Americans, whose team included names such as Patty Berg and Glenna Collett Vare, won 5 1/2-3 1/2.

Phyl was married in 1939 and she and her husband set up home at Stewarton, Ayrshire.

Phyl became a member of Troon Ladies and the Ayrshire women's county team for many post-war years. She won the county title in 1954, beating Helen Holm in the final. Mrs Wylie has been captain and present of the country over the years and is an honorary member of Troon Ladies and her original club, Parkstone, near Bournemouth.

Phyl was a guest of honour at St Andrews during the 2008 match played over the Old Course and met up with other past Curtis Cup players - of a different vintage - to have lunch in the R&A clubhouse. Her biggest thrill was holding the Curtis Cup trophy after all these years.

She will celebrate her 101st birthday in August. Last year the Troon Ladies club put on a special 100th birthday party for her in the clubhouse.

POWERAID PGA ASSISTANTS CHAMPIONSHIP - Mackay qualifies from Scottish regional event

Former Ayrshire Strokeplay Champion Jamie Mackay secured one of the qualifying places in the Powerade PGA Assistants Championship Scottish qualifying event at Auchterarder this week.

 

Securing one of the 17 qualifying places, Mackay now goes to the championship final at The East Sussex National course, which takes place from 13 to 15 June.

 

Also numbering amongst the qualifiers were Iain McNab (Dundonald Links) and Stuart Williamson (West Kilbride)

AYRSHIRE SCRATCH LEAGUES - Opening defeat for Kilmarnock (Barassie)

The opening fixtures in the 2012 Ayrshire Scratch Leagues have been played recently.

In Division 1, 2011 runners up Kilmarnock (Barassie) crashed to a 5 - 1 away defeat at Irvine Ravenspark in their opening fixture of the season.

Also in Division 1, newly promoted Ballochmyle were beaten 4.5 - 1.5 at home to Loudoun in their firs match in the top division.

The only other fixture played so far is in Division 4 where the Division 5 winners from last year, Girvan, maintained their winning ways with a 5 - 1 win at Ayr Dalmilling in their fist fixture this year.

AYRSHIRE FOURBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - Loudoun secure first spot in third round

Loudoun Gowf Club are the first club through to round 3 of the 2012 Ayrshire Fourball Championship.

The Loudoun team of Graeme Gebbie & John Houston edged through in their away match with Allan Muir & Brian Stewart (Chase), winning at the first extra hole.

The loudoun representatives will have a home match in round 3, against either Mick McGowan & Gerry Reid (Alton) or Derek & Robert Bryson (New Cumnock)

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Wallace Thornton Trophy fixtures

The fixture list for the 2012 Ayrshire Junior Golf League Wallace Thornton Trophy competition have been announced.

The scratch team event will involved the 10 Ayrshire Junior Golf League member clubs who finished best placed in the recent Ayrshire Boys Team Championship competition.

Holders Troon Welbeck face a tough qualifying section which includes the 2011 runners up Kilmarnock (Barassie).

The winners of each section will contest the final at Prestwick St Cuthbert GC in September.

US COLLEGE GOLF - Linzi Allan qualifies for West Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - Newman University junior (third year) student Linzi Allan (from Ayrshire) has qualified for the NCAA Division II West Regional tournament which will be conducted May 6-8 at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

Allan qualified for the event as an individual, and will be eligible for the NCAA Div. II National Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, should she qualify for it. Fellow Heartland Conference golfer Mercedes Rios from Dallas Baptist will join Allan as an individual in the tournament.

At the 2012 Heartland Conference Women's Golf Championship last week in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the Scots girl ended with a team-best 77 in the final round of the tournament, which was played at

Hardscrabble Golf Course.
