AYRSHIRE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Holder Smyth through to quarter finals

The holder of the Ayrshire Matchplay title, Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) - pictured - safely negotiated his first round tie in the 2012 competition, being played this week at Western Gailes, when the opening matches took place on Monday evening, 7th May.

In the first round, Smyth faced another former winner, Steven Murray (Troon Welbeck), and enged into the quarter finals with a 2 & 1 victory.

In the quarter finals, Smyth will face a tough match against Tommy McInally (Loudoun) who booked his place int he last eight with a 4 & 3 win over Stuart Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie)

Newly crowned Strokeplay Champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) came out on top in his tie against his clubmate Del Chamberlain, although the win was a narrow one with the match concluding on the final green.

Wilson now faces former internationalist Steven McEwan (Loudoun) on Tuesday night, after McEwan saw off the challenge of Stephen Spence (Irvine) by 2 & 1

Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Nicholas) was a comfortable 5 & 4 winner over John Shanks (Irvine) and now plays Steven Stamper (Girvan) for a place in the semi final, after Stamper reached the last eight with a 4 & 3 win over John Haggarty (Loudoun).

The other quarter final will be between last years beaten finalist Gary Bryden (Girvan) and David Orchiston (Ballochmyle), after Bryden beat Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) by 3 & 2 and Orchiston had a one hole win over Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) on Monday night.
