Rachel wins Ayrshire Girls' Spring Medal

The first medal of the season for the County girls was played over Prestwick St. Nicholas on Sunday 15th April, on a bright but cold windy afternoon.  

The overall winner was Rachel Irvine from Largs who had a nett 75 playing off 11 handicap. 

Hazel McGarvie, Troon Ladies had the best inward half to take 2nd place on 78.   

The bronze winner was Emma Paterson from Loudoun with a nett 76 and 2nd was Louise Duncan, West Kilbride on 80.   

The SSS is 72 and CSS on the day 75.

The Pre-handicap girls played 10 holes on a shortened course and their results were:-

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - First round matches completed

The first round matches in the 2012 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions competition were completed last week, with the remaining 32 players now due to complete their second round ties by 20th May.

Former finalist Scott McCahill (Brunston Castle) won away from home by 2 holes against Andrew Carroll (Drongan) and now travels to play David Kinnell (Saxone) in round 2 after Kinnell received a walkover against Steven Jackson (Wallacetown).

Walkovers were also awarded to Paul Giffney (Ardeer) and Nicol Auld (Whiting Bay) against Malcolm McKay (Maybole) and Steven Murray (Troon Welbeck) respectively.

AYRSHIRE SENIORS LEAGUE - Troon Welbeck join for 2012

9 teams will contest the 2012 Ayrshire Seniors League after Troon Welbeck joined the other established clubs for the forthcoming fixtures, which will be played from May until August.

Teams in the competition will consist of 10 players over 55 years of age and will be played on a fourball handicap matchplay basis, with matches arranged on a home or away basis.

THE EDWARD TROPHY - Wilson wins historic event at Glasgow Gailes

David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) won the historic Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes on Saturday 21st April.

The former Scottish Boys Champion's 2 under par total of 140 over the 36 hole of the championship gave him a four shot victory over Craig Ross (Kirkhill).

The CSS for the two rounds was 74 & 75.

UNIVERSITIES GOLF - McDonald chosen for World Championship team

Following his recent win in the national championship, Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the World Universities Golf Championship in July.

The British Universities and Colleges Sport organisation (BUCS) has announced that the following players have been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Universities Golf Championships at Liberec in the Czech Republic from 2nd to 7th July 2012.

US COLLEGE GOLF - Allan performs well in Arkansas

Linzi Allan (Newman University) from Ayrshire tied for fourth place in a field of 34 players at the Heartland Conference Women's Championship, played at Hardscrabble Golf Club, Fort Smith in Arkansas.
Over a par-70 course of 5,914, Linzi had rounds of 81 and 77 for 158 - 15 shots behind the winner by five, Haley Haught (St Edwards) who scored 73-70 for 143.

LADIES PROFESSIONAL GOLF - Good finish from Feggans in Spain

Ayrshire's Pamela Feggans had a two-under-par 70 - one of the best scores of the final round - to finish joint 10th in the Spanish Banesto Tour event at La Penaza Golf Club, Zaragoza on Saturday 21 April.

The Patna player has not had the best of luck since she turned pro but this should boost her confidence. She had improving rounds o f 74, 73 and 70 for a one-over-par total of 217, birdieing the fifth, 11th and 16th with only one bogey, at the fourth, in her closing round.

Feggans finished five shots behind the winner, Marjet Van Der Graaf from the Netherlands who had scores of 71, 69 and 71 for five-under 211.

Carly Booth from Comrie, Perthshire, came into this event on a high, having scored her first pro win in France last weekend but only in her second round did she recapture that form. She had scores of 77, 69 and 74 for a total of 220 and a share of 20th place.

Carly had three birdies but a double bogey 6 at the fourth and three bogeys on the inward half.

UNIVERSITIES GOLF - Jack McDonald takes national title

Stirling University dominated the BUCS Student Tour Finals at West Lancs Golf Club this week with Jack McDonald (pictured right) winning the men's title and Hannah McCook the women's title after a countback.

Stirling provided the first five finishers in the men's championship, who did not include the pre-tournament favourite, Graeme Robertson.

Sunday's Craigmillar Park Open winner finished joint eighth on 295 - six shots behind winning team-mate Jack McDonald.

McDonald, a Kilmarnock Barassie GC member, had led at the start of the round on 217, one shot ahead another Stirling student, Kit Holmes and Conor Wilson (Plymouth).

Holmes and Wilson drifted out of contention over the final round with scores of 74 and 76 respectively and it was Stirling's Darren Timms who chased McDonald home.

McDonald signed off with a 72 for one-over-par 289, one shot ahead of the fast finishing Timms who shot a splendid 67 for 290.

Stirling pair Zander Culverwell and Dewi Merckx also finished well with a 70 apiece for the same total of 291. Culverwell was officially placed third on a card countback.

Hannah McCook wins women's title on card countback

In the women's championship Stirling's Hannah McCook won in an exciting finish. A Scotland girl international, the Nethy Bridge student's closing round of four-under-par 70 was easily the best of the whole women's tournament and it gave her a final total of 305.

Welsh international Gemma Bradbury (St Anrews) was able to match that aggrgate with a final round of 73 but she lost out to McCook on a card countback.
Hannah said later:

"I played really well for that last round of 70. I just managed to keep it all together. Everything was working. I was 4 under for the front 9 then level for the back 9. I had a double bogey on the 4th but I just kept patient and the birdies just came. So happy to have returned so well since my wrist surgery and injury."

York's Charlotte Austwick had led by TEN shots after three rounds but slumped to a nightmare last round of 84 which opened the door for McCook and Bradbury who pipped her by one shot.

Charlotte was even deprived of third place on 306. Eilidh Briggs (Stirling), the 2011 Scottish Under-18 girls champion, also finished on 306 with a 73, easily her best of the week, and the Scot was officially placed third after a card countback.

Defending champion and pre-tournament favourite Kelsey MacDonald (Stirling) injured an arm and retired after two rounds.

McDonald, pictured, a member of Kilmarnock Barassie GC, has come to the front with ever-improving rounds of 74, 73 and 70 for a 54-hole tally of one-over-par 217. He leads by one shot from Stirling team-mate Kit Holmes (75-72-71) and Plymouth's Conor Wilson (74-72-72), both on 218. Graeme Robertson (Stirling), one of the pre-tournament favourites, is back in eighth place - but only five shots off McDonald's pace. The Glenbervie man, winner of the Craigmillar Park Open in Edinburgh on Sunday, could still do it if he gets the bit between his teeth over the final 18 holes. It's a one-filly race for the women's title with Charlotte Austwick (York) leading by 10 shots after rounds of 74-77-71 for 222. Her nearest rivals on 232 are Scottish girls champion Eilidh Briggs (Stirling) (78-77-78) and Welsh international Gemma Bradbury (82-76-74). Kelsey MacDonald (Stirling), one of the pre-tournament favourites, is presumed to have retired from the competition. Her name does not figure in the draw for the final round and no second or third-round scores are listed for her on the tournament website. AYRSHIRE BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Walker leads Kilmarnock (Barassie) to successful defence of title.

Scotland boys international Euan Walker led the way as Kilmarnock (Barassie) retained the Matt Lygate Trophy and Ayrshire Boys Team Champions title when the opening event of the Ayrshire golf season took place at a sunny Ayr Dalmilling golf course on Sunday 15th April.

Teams representing 14 Ayrshire clubs took part in the event, with the best three scores counting towards the team total.

Walker, who was first out in the Kilmarnock (Barassie) team, posted an excellent four under par 65 to help his team to a team total of 212 and a 10 shot winning margin over second place Irvine (Bogside).

With two of their four team members posting nett scores under par, Ballochmyle took the Andrew D Nimmo Trophy and handicap Champions title with a team total of 204.

The Prestwick Circuits Trophy for the best individual scratch score went to Euan Walker, his 65 being the only return under par of the day, some six shots ahead of his nearest challenger, team mate Stewart Russell.

Scott Figgins (Irvine Ravenspark) took the Carrick Trophy for the best individual nett score with 81 less 16 for 65.

Stewart Russell (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Robert Clark (Ballochmyle) won the two individual handicap classes with net scores of 66.

At the conclusion of the competition, Ayrshire Golf Association President David Miller presented prizes and trophies to the succesful teams and individuals.
