AYRSHIRE STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Draw for 2012 event

The 2012 Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship will be held at Prestwick St Nicholas GC on Sunday 22nd April with many of the best golfers in the county bidding to land the title won last year by Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie)

Having turned professional since his play off win over Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) last year at West Kilbride, Mackay does not defend the trophy this year.

With the competition proving increasingly popular year by year, the entry was again over subscribed and resulted in a ballot being required on 2.0 handicap in order to reduce the field to the maximum permitted.

All competitors are reminded to register with officials at least 15 minutes prior to the advertised tee times.

AYRSHIRE LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP - Extra holes win puts Mckay into semi finals

The Semi finals of the Ayrshire Ladies County Championship, being held this week over the Troon Portland course, will feature Mhari McKay (West Kilbride), Jane Finnie (Troon ladies), Lesley hendry (Largs Routenburn) and Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) after they won through the first two rounds of matchplay on Wednesday.

Mhari McKay, a student at Stirling University, beat clubmate Catherine Garrett by 5&3 in the opening round of matchplay to set up a quarter final match against top qualifier Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Nicholas) who had defeated Jill West (Irvine) by 4&3 on Wednesday morning.

In an epic encounter in the afternoon, McKay went two holes behind with four to play and was still two down with three remaining before winning the sixteenth and seventeenth to square the match. A half at the closing hole saw the players go on to extra holes where McKay edged out Malcolm to book her semi final place.

Host club member Jane Finnie beat Rachael Irvine (Largs) 7&6 in round 1 and faced Prestwick St Nicholas ladies champion Ros Purdom in round 2, Purdom having beaten Gillian Henderson (Belleisle Ladies) by 7&6 in the morning. In the afternoon however it was Finnie who took control, scoring around 2 under par over the holes played on her way to a 7&6 victory.

Multiple former champion Lesley Hendry (Largs Routenburn) saw off Barbara Beckett (Loudoun) by 5&3 in the morning whilst Pauline Patrick (Irvine) defeated Sheila Adams (Loudoun) by 3&2 to secure a quarter final match against Hendry, who won through to another semi final with victory over Patrick by 3&2 in their match on Wednesday afternoon.

The remaining quarter final was between Audrey Thomson (Loudoun), who secured her place with a 4&3 win over Sarah Ann Bottomly (Troon Ladies) in the morning, and Vets Internationalist Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) who beat Nora McCrossan (Troon Ladies) by 6&5 in the opening round. In a close match, Glennie booked the last semi final spot with a two hole victory over Thomson.

The semi finals are scheduled for Thursday morning with the final at 2.00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

R & A FOUNDATION TOURNAMENT - McDonald pipped in play off in scholars event

Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), a student at Stirling University, lost out in a three way play off for the mens title in the R&A Foundation Scholars' Tournament at the Eden and Old courses in St Andrews on Monday and Tuesday this week, with Yorkshireman David Booth, also of Stirling University, winning the title.

McDonald, Booth and Conor Wilson from Plymouth University finished the event, which covered two rounds on the Eden course on Monday and one on the Old Course on Tuesday, tied on 215. At the first play off hole Wilson found the burn and was eliminated.

Booth closed out McDonald on the second play off hole, the 18th on the Old Course, with an 8 foot putt for birdie.

Curtis Cup reserve Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn), who is also a student at Stirling University, won the womens title for the second time

AYRSHIRE LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP - Malcolm leads qualifiers at Troon Portland

Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Nicholas) led the qualifiers as the 2012 Ayrshire Ladies County Championship began at Troon Portland on Tuesday 10th April.

The early starters in the field of 61 players had  blustery and showery conditions to contend with whilst the later starters enjoyed much calmer drier, and at times very sunny, conditions.

Former champion Malcolm, who also led the qualifiers in the event 12 months ago, began her round with an eagle and a birdie at the opening two holes on her way to a two over par 77 to lead the 16 qualifiers for the matchplay stages which will take place at Troon Portland on Wednesday and Thursday.

SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Russell, Thomas and Cathie through to round 3 as 8 Ayrshire players remain

Kilmarnock Barassie's Stewart Russell and the Irvine duo of Jack Thomas & Greg Cathie are through to the third round of the Scottish Boys Championship at Murcar Links, whilst eight Ayrshire players remain in the competition after completion of all the first round ties on Tuesday.

In the remaining first round matches played on Tuesday, Blair Gavin (Kilmarnock Barassie) set up a second round clash with Cameron Buist (Dunblane New) after defeating Cameron Farrell (Cardross) by one hole in their opening round clash.

Christopher Murray (West Kilbride) bowed out at the opening stage, going down by 3 & 1 to Stuart Blair (Royal Musselburgh).

In the final first round match of the championship, Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) beat ian Hill (Muckart) by 2 & 1 and now plays Lewis Bain (Turnhouse) in the second round on Wednesday.

Telfer's result left eight Ayrshire players remaining in the championship after round one was completed.

Only three of the remaining Ayrshire players were scheduled to play their second round matches on Tuesday and all three won through to book their places in the third round.

Jack Thomas (Irvine) faced Kevin Prentice (Lanark) in round 2 and produced one of the results of the day with a 7 & 6 win to progress. Thomas will now play Stuart Russell (Kilmarnock Barassie) in an all Ayrshire third round tie after Russell beat Shaun McBride (Langlands) at the first extra hole in their second round clash.

Greg Cathie (Irvine) made it three from three on Tuesday afternoon with a 2 & 1 victory over Calum Aitken Kilmacolm), and now plays Dominic Dougan (Colville Park) in round 3.

The remaining second round matches and all third round matches are scheduled to be completed on Wednesday.

Callum Gorrie (Kilmarnock Barassie), David Wilson (Troon Welbeck), Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie), Blair Gavin (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) will be in action on Wednesday morning to try to secure places in round three.

AYRSHIRE LADIES WINTER FOURSOMES - Skelmorlie pair land county title



The Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association Winter Foursomes final was held on Wednesday 21st March at West Kilbride with Kath McKellar & Jenny McGee of Skelmorlie playing against Ann McGillivray & Mara Lindsay of Prestwick St Nicholas

The final was played in dry but cold and blustery conditions. At times some excellent golf was executed by both pairings but Kath & Jenny began to edge ahead on the back nine and finally beat Mara & Ann on the 15th winning 4&3.

 

Despite the cold weather it was nice to see a few members both past and present there to lend their support.

SCOTTISH CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Brown best for Ayrshire at Leven

Scott Brown (Turnberry) was the best placed of the three Ayrshire player in the opening 'Major' of the Scottish amateur golf calendar in 2012, the 72 hole Scottish Champion Of Champions event at Leven on 7th and 8th April.

Rounds of 72, 75, 69 and 72, on the par 71 course, left Brown in a tie for 10th place on 288, 13 shots adrift of the winner, Fraser McKenna of Balmore.

Two of Ballochmyle's winning Scottish Club Championship team were also in the field for the event.

Craig Hamilton finished on 301 with rounds of 78, 76, 72 & 75 whilst William Fleming finished on 318 with rounds of 80, 81, 82 & 75.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR ORDER OF MERIT - Tom Lehman Trophies competition back as counting event

With confirmation that the Tom Lehman Trophies competition will be held this year, under the auspices of South Ayrshire Council's golf administration, the Ayrshire Golf Association executive have agreed to again include the event as a counting competition in the Ayrshire Junior Order Of Merit.

The Buzzworks sponsored competition, which will take place on Tuesday 7th August, will return as an Order of Merit event, after a two year absence, having previously been dropped from the list of counting events.

SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Close call for Wilson as he opens title defence

Reigning Scottish Boys Champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) was pushed all the way in the opening round of his title defence at Murcar Links on Monday 9th April when he was taken to the 19th hole by Alisdair MacDougall (St Andrews New) before edging through to round 2.

Two up with two to play, Wilson let his lead slip and MacDougall fought back to square the match and take the tie to extra holes but Wilson holed an excellent put at the first extra hole to win through to round 2. In round 2 on Wednesday, Wilson will play Gregor Cannon (Wigtown & Bladnoch).

The other Ayrshire players who finished their first round matches on Monday evening had mixed success.

Jack McCluskey (Ayr Belleisle) took his opponent, Martin McCorkell (Gleddoch) to the final hole in their tie but lost out by two holes.

Callum Gorrie (Kilmarnock Barassie) brought better news with one of the biggest wins of the day, beating Sam Kiloh (Portlethen) by 7 & 6. The possibility of an all Kilmarnock Barassie second round tie was dashed however, when David Clelland (Hamilton) secured a second round match against Gorrie on Wednesday with a 4 & 3 win over Colin Currie (Kilmarnock Barassie).

David Wilson's Scotland boys team mate Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) also went into extra holes before beating Grant Stewart (Pitlochry) at the 20th to secure a second round match on Wednesday with Greg Forrester (Lundin).

The remaining first round matches and some second round ties will be completed on Tuesday.

Ayrshire players still to play their opening matches are Blair Gavin (Kilmarnock Barassie), Christopher Murray (Troon Welbeck) and Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert).

SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Russell, Thomas and Cathie early winners

Stewart Russell (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Irvine GC duo Jack Thomas and Greg Cathie (Irvine) were the early Ayrshire winners as the 2012 Scottish Boys Championship got under way at Murcar Links in Aberdeen on Monday 9th April.

Out in the second game of the championship, teeing off at 6.53 am, Russell went all the way to the final hole before overcoming his opponent, Ross Robertson (Old Ranfurly) by two holes.

In the second round on Tuesday, Russell will face Peter Sangster (Thurso).

Jack Thomas (Irvine) also booked his place in round 2 with a two hole victory, over Murray Naysmith (Dalmahoy) but the prospect of an all Ayrshire second round tie was dashed when Ayrshire Boys Champion Callum Beveridge (Troon Welbeck) crashed out by 4 & 3 to Kevin Prentice (Lanark). Prentice now takes on Jack Thomas on Tuesday in the second round.

Greg Cathie (Irvine) became the third Ayrshire player to reach the second round when he overcame the challenge of Rory Stewart (Crieff) at the 19th hole.

In the second round, on Tuesday, Cathie faces Callum Aitken (Kilmacolm) who ended the prospect of an all Ayrshire second round match when he beat Euan Henderson (Kilmarnock Barassie) by 1 hole in their opening round match.

The remaining early morning ties involving Ayrshire players provided no good news with Stuart Walsh (Irvine) losing by 4 & 3 to Robbie Whelan (East Kilbride), Stuart Easton (Irvine) losing by 3 & 2 to Lewis Reid (Dougalston) and Louis Murray (Troon Welbeck) losing out by 2 & 1 to Scott Jeen (Milngavie).

AYRSHIRE FOURBALL - Ayr Seafield storm into round 2

Ayr Seafield are the latest team into round 2 of the Ayrshire Fourball Championship after a crushing win over North Beach this week.

the Ayr Seafield pair of Allan MacDougall and Shaun Granger used home advantage to full effect, defeating Robert Hogg and Ian Harding of North Beach by 6 & 5 to progress to round 2.

In the second round, the Ayr Seafield duo will face en away tie at either Irvine Ravenspark or Muirkirk.

CHAMPIONSHJIP ACCOMMODATION - Local golfers sought to host South African players

The Ayrshire Golf Association have been approached to assist in arranging accommodation for a group of young South African players during two of the major amateur events to be held in Ayrshire this year.

 

 A squad of squad of six South African players  will be in Ayrshire for this year’s Scottish Stroke-Play Championship and Amateur Championship being staged at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and Royal Troon respectively.

 The Scottish Golf Union are in the third year of sending the Scottish men’s squad to SA to play and train during our winter. In this schedule , Scotland play an International Match against South Africa and have forged close relations with their counterparts at the South African Golf Association.

 

Out of this relationship Scotland have agreed that every second year an International Match will be held in  Scotland.

 

As a result the team of six players will be in Scotland this year to play in the Scottish Stroke-Play, Links Trophy and The Amateur Championship  as well as playing the International Match at Prestwick GC on 13 and 14 of June.

 

Scotland are keen to assist by trying to have the players hosted during the three tournaments by local golfers.

 

 The dates during which hosting is being sought for the the six players are :-

 

30 May to 3 June (incl) for the Scottish Stroke-Play

and

15 to 23 June (incl) for The Amateur Championship.

 

The Ayrshire Golf Association President David Miller is co ordinating efforts in this regard.

AYRSHIRE BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - 14 teams in season opener at Dalmilling

Teams from 14 clubs will contest the Ayrshire Golf Association's opening event of the season, the Ayrshire Boys Team Championship, at Ayr Dalmilling GC on Sunday 15th April.

56 of the leading junior boys from the county will compete for the Matt Lygate Trophy (Team Scratch), Andrew D Nimmo Trophy (Team Nett), Prestwick Circuits Trophy (Individual Scratch) and Carrick Trophy (Individual Nett).

Kilmarnock (Barassie) will have a strong team bidding to defend the Lygate Trophy whilst, perhaps surprisingly, Annanhill do not have a team defending the A.D Nimmo Trophy.

Three more teams are through to round 2 f the 2012 Ayrshire Fourball Championship after matches played this week.

Jim Anderson & Paul Church (Skelmorlie) had a 4 & 3 home win over Gordon Johnston & George Brown (Kilbirnie Place) and now travel to play the winners of the tie between Troon St Meddans and West Kilbride.

Also through to round 2 are Alan Gaff & Alan Copland (Girvan) who secured a 4 & 2 away victory over Colin Thorn & William Wilson (Kilmarnock Barassie) and now face another away tie in round 2 against either Beith or Ayr Carrick.

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Jordan books place in round 2

Gary Jordan of Crosshouse GC is the latest player to book his place in the second round of the 2012 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions competition.

Playing away from home against Russell Wyper of Ayr Dalmilling, Jordan recorded a 3 & 2 win to secure a home tie in the second round against William Wilson of Ballochmyle.

The prestigeous Tom Lehman Trophies competition for juniors will go ahead after all this year.

After South Ayrshire Council confirmed just a couple of weeks ago that the event was not to be held this year, an alternative plan was agreed which will allow the competition to take place this year, under the auspices of the local authorities golf department.

Whilst final details of the competition format for 2012 are still to be finalised, the event will go ahead, provisionally scheduled for Tuesday 7th August, with this years event being supported by sponsorship from the Buzzworks group.

Further details of competition format and entry forms will be made available to clubs in due course.

SCOTTISH HYDRO JUNIOR TOUR - Wilson best for Ayrshire in event 1 at Gullane

Scottish Boys Champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) - pictured - was the best of the Ayrshire players in the first of the Scottish Hydro Junior Tour events of the season, held at Gullane No 2 on the weekend of 31st March - 1st April.

Wilson returned rounds of 71, 74 & 70 for a three round total of 215, two over par. This left Wilson in 11th place, 7 shots adrift of the winner, Alexander Wilson (The Renaissance Club).

Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) returned a four over par score of  217 (71/74/72) for a share of 16th place whilst Callum Gorrie (Kilmarnock Barassie) finished tied 22nd on 222, 9 over par, after rounds of 73, 76 & 73.

Ayrshire's other representative in the event, Ayrshire Boys Champion Callum Beveridge, returned opening scores of 78 & 77 but retired after completing his second round.

 

AYRSHIRE FOURBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - Doon Valley win first match of the season

Doon Valley recorded the first win in the 2012 Ayrshire Fourball Championship recently.

James Graham & Marc Wallace travelled away from home to record a 3 & 1 victory over David Hamilton & George Vogan of Auchenharvie 88.

The Doon Valley pair will have a home tie in round 2, against either Ballochmyle or Malletsheugh.

The remaining 11 first round ties are due to be played by 15th April

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - First results posted for 2012

The first two results in the 2012 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions competition have been recorded this week.

Jim Anderson of Skelmorlie was first to post a win this season with a 2&1 victory at home against George Ross (Malletsheugh). Anderson now faces an away tie against either Steven Murray (Troon Welbeck) or Nicol Auld (Whiting Bay).

In the other match played recently, William Wilson of Ballochmyle secured a place in round 2 with a 7&6 win over Brian Robertson (Auchenharvie 88).

Wilson will be away from home in round 2, against either Russell Wyper (Ayr Dalmilling) or gary Jordan (Crosshouse).

The remaining 13 first round ties are due to be completed by 15th April
