The early starters in the field of 61 players had blustery and showery conditions to contend with whilst the later starters enjoyed much calmer drier, and at times very sunny, conditions.
Former champion Malcolm, who also led the qualifiers in the event 12 months ago, began her round with an eagle and a birdie at the opening two holes on her way to a two over par 77 to lead the 16 qualifiers for the matchplay stages which will take place at Troon Portland on Wednesday and Thursday.
