Three of the four Ayrshire players who qualified for the matchplay stages of the Woman’s Amateur Championship, being held this week at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club, won through their first round ties on Wednesday the 9th of June, to reach the last 32 stage of the competition.
Hazel MacGarvie (Royal Troon) beat England’s Katie Warren by
6 & 5 to set up a second round tie on Thursday morning against Iceland’s Jóhanna
Lea Lúðvíksdóttir
Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) had an even more convincing
first round win, beating England’s Thalia Kirby by 7 & 5 to set up a second
round tie against England’s Lottie Woad.
Also through to round two is Rachel Foster (Prestwick St
Nicholas), courtesy of a 2 & 1 victory over England’s Shannon O’Dwyer. In
Thursday morning’s second round Rachel Foster will be up against in form fellow
Scot, internationalist Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe), who won the prestigious
St Rule Trophy at St Andrews last month, and who beat the other Ayrshire
qualifier, Luisa Gibson (Irvine), by 3 & 2 in round one.
There will be two rounds of matchplay on Thursday, reducing
the field from 32 players to just 8 quarter finalists, with the quarter and
semi finals due to be played on Friday and the final on Saturday.
