WEST OF SCOTLAND INTER COUNTY UNDER 18 BOYS LEAGUE - Ayrshire open with away win over Lanarkshire

The Ayrshire boys team opened their bid for the Wishart Trophy, and 2024 West of Scotland Inter County Under 18 League Championship, with a fine away win by 4.5 - 3.5 over the title holders Lanarkshire at Kirkhill GC on Sunday the 26th of May.

Lyle Vogwell led the line for the under 16's, recording a single hole victory in the lead tie, and although Mason Chisholm and Oliver Kane lost their ties, Liam Moran secured a crucial half in his tie. Trailing 2.5 - 1.5 after the four under 16 ties, the four under 18 players turned the match in Ayrshire's favour, takign three of the four ties to secure victory.

The otheer tie in the first round of fixtures was played on the 12th of may and resulted in a 4.5 - 3.5 win for renfrewshire over their hosts from Dumbartonshire at Dumbarton GC.

The next series of fixtures take place in June where Renfrewshire play host to Glasgow at Cochrane Castle on the 2nd, lanarkshire are at home to Stirlingshire at easter Moffat on the 16th and Ayrshire host Dumbartonshire at Ayr Belleisle on the 23rd.

SCOTTISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Freya Russell loses out in the final

Freya Russell (Royal Troon) came agonisingly close to a first senior national title when she lost out in the final of the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship at Nairn Dunbar GC on Saturday the 26th of May 2024.

In the 36 hole strokeplay qualifying event, Freya was one of two Ayrshire players who qualified for the top flite of matchplay, finishing joint seventh on 147, one over par. The other Ayrshire qualifier was Hannah Ounap (Loudoun) who finished ninth on 148, two over par.

Jodie Graham (Royal Troon) finished joint 25th on 154, eight over par, to qualify for the second flite matchplay, for The Clark Rosebowl.

In the Clark Rosebowl matchplay event, Jodie Graham beat Pamas Abhiteachapan (St Regulus Ladies) by 2&1 in the first round before losing out by 6&5 in the semi finals to Summer Elliot (Inverness).

In the championshoip matchplay, the two Ayrshire qualifiers were destined to meet in the first round, with Freya Russell beating Hannah Ounap by 3&2 to progress. In the second round Russell beat top qualifier Jasmine Mackintosh (Murcar Links) by 2 holes before securing her place in the final with a 2&1 semi final win over Robin Fowlie (Murcar Links).

In the final Russell faced Scotland internationalist Lorna McClymont (Milngavie), who had lost in the final in extra holes in 2022 at Trump International, and McClymont took an early lead, with her experience helping her to build on her early advantage and run out eventual winner of the title with a 5&3 victory.

AYRSHIRE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Entry forms forwarded to club secretaries for Caprington event

The 2024 Ayrshire Club Championship competition will be held at Caprington Golf Club on Sunday the 7th of July, and entry forms were emailed to all club secretaries on Monday the 20th of May.

Teams of three players will contest the R L Crawford trophy on behalf of their respective clubs, with the best two scratch scores from three forming the team score.

Individual handical limit for the event is 4.0 and entries close on Saturday the 22nd of June.

DOC THOM AYRSHIRE ORDER OF MERIT - Hillhouse Cup win moves Nicholas Gold into contention

Nicholas Gold (Troon St Meddans) moved himself into contention in the early stages of the 2024 Ayrshire Order of Merit , for the Doc Thom Salver, with a win on Sunday 19th May in the annual competition for The Hillhouse Cup over the championship course at Royal Troon.

A scratch score of 71 gave him the trophy by a single shot from Iain Brown (Largs), with six other players, including Cameron Aitken (Largs), Andrew Gordon (Ayr Belleisle), Ben Gibson (Kilmarnock Barassie), Alistair Belford (Prestwick St Nicholas), Harvey Broadfoot (Royal Troon),and Ruben Lindsay (Turnberry) finishing two strokes further back on 74.

The win moved Gold straight into the top eight in the chase for the Order of Merit title, after completion of the first four of the twenty one counting events.

Ayrshire Strokeplay champion Gavin Chesney (Kilbirnie Place) holds a slim lead over Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle), Iain Brown (Largs), and Harvey Broafdfoot (Royal Troon) in joint second place at this early stage.

The next qualifying events are the prestwick St vCuthbert Open on the 25th of may and the West Kilbride men's Open on the 26th of May.

AYRSHIRE WOMEN'S STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Draw circulated for Prestwick

The draw for the 2024 Ayrshire Women's Strokeplay Championship, which will take place at Prestwick Golf Club on Sunday the 2nd of June, has been made and distributed to competitors.

Competitors are requested to check in with Ayrshire Golf Association officials on arrival, in the main entrance hallway of the club, at least 15 minutes prior to their published tee time.

In addition to the two trophies for scratch and handicap winners there will also be two nearest the hole prizes during the event - closest in one shot at the second and closest in two shots at the eighteenth.

The players returning the top eight scratch scores on the day will progress to contest the Ayrshire Women's matchplay Championship at Rowallan Castle GC later in June.

There is still a few spaces available in the competition field, which will be filled on a first come first served basis.

Any players, who is a member of a club affiliated to The Ayrshire Golf Association, still wishing to apply to take part should submit a completed entry form to the Area Secretary and arrange to make payment of the £10 entry fee, once acceptance of the entry is confirmed

The 2024 Ayrshire Junior Golf League competitions are under way, with several ties being played recently.

In the AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP qualifying section A has seen three results posted, the latest two being a 4-2 away win for Turnberry over Kilmarnock barassie and a 3-3 draw at Prestwick St Cuthbert between the host club and Kilmarnock Barassie.
