WEST OF SCOTLAND WOMANS INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire lose whilst Renfrewshire take title

Ayrshire were defeated by Lanarkshire on the final day of the West Of Scotland Womans Inter County matches at Haggs Castle on Wednesday 18 June, leaving the Ayrshire side without a win in the series.

Renfrewshire started the day level with Lanarkshire so both teams were anxious to get as many points on the board as possible. 

Lanarkshire, in their match with Ayrshire, won all 3 of their foursomes matches which gave Renfrewshire a difficult task. Clare Hargan and Jillian Farrell of D & A had a great win over Eilidh Briggs and Katrina Milne by 6 & 4 but Renfrewshire won the next two games which still kept the matches level at lunchtime.

Lanarkshire started the afternoon with  wins by Lauren d'Ambrosio and Susan Wood.  Ayrshire came back strongly to win the next 3 games and Emma Caddow took the last.  A win for Lanarkshire giving them a total of 5  match points and 16 individual games.

Eilidh Briggs took the first match of the singles for Renfrewshire with a 4 & 3 win over Lorraine Campbell.  

D & A won the next 2. Donna Jackson held on to get a 1 up victory over Laura McGeachy and yesterday's Renfrewshire hero Liz Stewart had a great 4 & 3 win over Anne Laing.  

So it was all down to Megan Briggs.  After an up and down match, Megan sank a brilliant putt for a birdie 3 at the 17th  for a half with Nichola Ferguson which proved to be the winning putt for Renfrewshire.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Martin Riddall through to quarter finals

Martin Riddall (New Cumnock) it the latest player to book his place in the quarter finals of the 2014 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions competition.

On Tuesday evening, 17th June, he defeated local rival Iain Girvan (Muirkirk) by 7 & 5 at New Cumnock to go through to the last eight, where he faces an away match against either Gordon McKelvie (Royal Troon) or Gary Bryden (Girvan).

THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - McDonald is sole Ayrshire player through to matchplay stages

Jack McDonald

Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) is the sole Ayrshire player through to the matchplay stages of the 2014 Amateur Championship, being played at Royal Portrush and Port Stewart in Northern Ireland this week.

McDonald, a semi finalist in the championship two years ago at Royal Troon, was one of nine Scots who qualified for the latter stages after the opening two strokeplay qualifying rounds.

Euan Walker

There were two other Ayrshire players in the initial field for the championship and McDonald's club mate Euan Walker came agonisingly close to being one of the players qualifying for the matchplay stages, finishing tied for 71st place on five over par 146, following rounds of 70 and 76, which left him just one shot adrift of progressing to the latter stages of the championship.

Charle Macneal

Charlie Macneal (Prestwick) was also in the field but finished in joint 155th place after rounds of 72 & 79 for a total of 151.

The 36 hole final was due to be played on Saturday 21st June but due to delays in the strokepplay rounds as a result of fog, the matchplay rounds have been rescheduled and the final will now take place on Sunday 22nd June.

AYRSHIRE SCRATCH LEAGUES - First win for Maybole in Division 5

Results were posted in Division 2 and Division 5 of the 2014 Ayrshire Scratch leagues this week, with Maybole gaining their first points of the season with a 4 - 2 home win over local rivals Brunston Castle in Division 5, although they also lost by a similar score away from home to Abbotsford.

In Division 2, Prestwick St Cuthbert remain unbeaten following a 5.5 - 0.5 home win over Caprington whilst Ardeer enjoyed their first win of the 2014 campaign with a 5 - 1 win over Girvan at Ardeer.

Day 2 of the matches brought some close fought games with all four Counties sharing the honours.

In the Renfrewshire Vs Lanarkshire match Eilidh Briggs kept her unbeaten record in both games.  After going down in the morning foursomes, Renfrewshire came back strongly in the singles, with Liz Stewart coming from being down all the way to square the match on the 18th, giving Renfrewshire a vital half.

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Walkover for Walker into semi finals

Sandy Walker (Ardeer) is into the semi finals of the 2014 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions Trophy competition by virtue of a walkover against Frank Murdoch (Brunston Castle).

Murdoch intimated his non availability for the semi final date in August due to a previous commitment and, having played his way through to the quarter finals, there was no alternative but to put Walker through.

This is the second successive year that the latter stages of the competition has featured a walkover in similar circumstances, despite all competitors being asked to note the fixed semi finals and final dates at the start of the event, and intimate withdrawal at an early stage if not available, or alternatively arrange a replacement prior to the commencement of the competition.

In matches played recently, Kenny Macaskill (Turnberry Staff) had a 4 & 3 home win over Craig Robertson (Abbotsford) to reach the quarter finals, where he will be away from home against either Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting bay) or Gordon Boyle (Turnberry).

Also through to the last eight is Adam Sweeney (Largs Routenburn) who had a 2 & 1 win over local rival Iain MacDonald (Largs) to set up a home tie in the quarter finals against either Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) or Craig Young (Loudoun).

All remaining third round matches are due for completion by 22nd June.

WEST OF SCOTLAND WOMANS INTER COUNTY MATCHES - Ayrshire lose out to Renfrewshire on opening day

Ayrshire lost out to Renfrewshire on the opening day of the West Of Scotland Womans Inter County Matches at Haggs Castle on Monday 16 June, as Lanarkshire also opened with a win over Dumbarton & Argyll.

Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire both got off to a fast start today.   For Renfrewshire, Eilidh Briggs had two good wins, playing in the foursomes with Katrina Milne whilst in the singles she comfortably beat Connie Jaffrey 6/5.

For Lanarkshire Fiona Norris, Rachel Cassidy, Emma Caddow and Lauren D'Ambrosio all scored good wins.

WEST OF SCOTLAND UNDER 18 LEAGUE - Ayrshire lose at home to Dumbartonshire

Ayrshire lost out to Dumbartonshire by 6 – 2 at Ardeer on Sunday 15^th June  in the second series of matches in the 2014 West Of Scotland Inter County Under 18 League, for the Wishart Trophy.

In the opening tie, Stuart Goodfellow (Hayston) raced into an early lead over Ross McDonald (Irivne), holing from 25 feet for birdie at the seventh to go four up, and McDonald never recovered, losing out by 4 & 3 in the end. 

The match score was levelled when Andrew Gordon (Ayr Belleisle) won thre out of five holes from the thirteenth to beat Andrew halfpenny (Dullatur) by 3 & 2. 

Dumbartonshire edged ahead once more when Shey Donald (Helensburgh) built on his three hole lead after seven over Elliot Spence (Loudoun) to win his tie by 6 & 4. 

The under 16 ties were shared 2 – 2 when Blair Fleming (Troon Welbeck) beat Ryan Clelland (Helensburgh) by 4 & 2.

In the lead under 18 tie, Jordan Fraser (Ayr Belleisle) holed a bunker shot for birdie at first then lost fopur of the next five holes, three of them to birdies, against Cameron Black (Cardross), who went on to beat Fraser by 4 & 3 and put Dumbartonshire in the lead again.

Sean Cook (Kilmarnock Barassie) was two or three down through most of the match to  James Sutherland (Hayston) but reduced the deficit to one hole after fifteen, only to see Sutherland take the next two holes for a 3 & 1 victory. 

Stuart Boyd (Haston) was four behind after eight holes against Luke Murdoch (Loudoun) and went five behind before staging a remarkable comeback over the inward half, winning four successive holes from the eleventh to the fourteenth to reduce the deficit to one, and finishing the comeback by winning the last two holes for a one hole victory, which also gave Dumbartonshire the match. 

The final match on the course between Murray McCrone (Troon Welbeck) and Aran Sinclair (Bearsden) was close throughout before McCrone lost two late holes to give Sinclair a 2 & 1 win and Dumbartonshire the match by 6 – 2.

In the other match played in the series on Sunday 15^th June, Lanarkshire recorded a 5 – 3 home win over Stirlingshire at Colville park.

The remaining match in the second series of matches takers place next Sunday, 22^nd June, when Renfrewshire play host to Glasgow at Caldwell.

Ayrshire's next match in the series is on 6^th July when they play Glasgow at Bishopbriggs

 

AYRSHIRE FOURBALL - Fewick and Beith through to quarter finals.

Fenwick and Beith are the latest two teams through to the quarter finals of the 2014 Ayrshire Fourball Championship.

Former finalists Phil Rooney & Robert Marshall (Beith) beat David Gemmill & Scott Ward (West Kilbride) by 2 & 1 at Beith to set up a quarter final tie at home to either Ayr Seafield GC or Turnberry Staff GC.

Alistair McCall & David Moore (Fenwick) had a home win over Jim Paterson & Danny Monaghan (Loudoun) by 3 & 2 in their third round clash, and now face an away tie against either Muirkirk GC or Auchenharvie 88 GC in the last eight.

All third round matches are due to be completed by 22nd June. The outstanding results from round three are :-

SCOTTISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP - Closing date for entries approaching

The 2014 Scottish Under-18 Girls (Close) Championship takes place at Dumfries and County Golf Club from July 15th to July19th.

The closing date for entries, Monday 16th June is fast approaching, so  get your entry in before it’s too late! 

The championship is open to Scottish girls with a handicap of 34 or below and is a great chance for all to experience championship golf!
