Kilmarnock (Barassie) secured wins in both the Wallace Thornton and Under 16 Trophy finals at Caprington on Sunday 4th September, to add to an impressive haul of Ayrshire trophies this season for the club.
In the UNDER 16 KNOCKOUT TROPHY final, the Barassie team were giving shots in all four ties to their higher handicapped opponents from Beith.
In the early stages, all four ties were close, but with 6 holes to play, Barassie had clear leads in three of the four ties.
Kyle Smith, in the lead match secured Barassie's first point with a 3 & 2 win over David Gray, but a spectacular collapse over the closing holes saw Robbie Gemmill crash to a 4 & 2 defeat by David Hewitson, to level the match.
With David Currie 2 up with 2 to play in the secoond tie, a win for Fraser Kerr in the last match on the course would ensure victory for Barassie, and Kerr duly obliged with a 3 & 2 win over Colin Evans. David Currie ensured a clear win for barassie qwith a 2 & 1 win over Chris O'Donnell.

In the WALLACE THORNTON TROPHY final Kilmarnock (Barassie), the holders for the last two years, began as firm favourites against West Kilbride.
Led by Scottish Boys Strokeplay Champion, Steven McEwan, the Barassie team of four had a combined handicap total of scratch, McEwan's +3 handicap being offset by his three team mates 1 handicaps, whilst West Kilbride's total handicap for the 4 team members was 28. With the competition being comopeted on a scratch basis, the enormity of West Kilbride's task was clear from the outset.
Despite the underdog tag, the West Kilbride team competed well early on, keeping Barassie in their sights in most of the ties, however over the middle third of the round, Barassie pulled ahead of their opponents, building comfortable leads in all four ties to set up a 4 - 0 overall victory.

In what is proving an outstandingly succesful season in the county for the Barassie juniors, a total of Ayrshire trophies are already on display within the club.
As well as the Wallace Thornton Trophy and Under 16 Knockout Trophy, Kilmarnock Barassie and their juniors have won the Matt Lygate Trophy (Ayrshire Boys Team Champions), The Prestwick Circuits Trophy (Robert McKnight), the Ayrshire Boys Championship (Jamie Mackay), the Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Championship (Euan Brown), The Ayrshire Order Of Merit (Jamie Mackay), whilst Steven McEwan has a chance to add to the haul, being in the final of the Champion Of Champions Trophy.
Awards were presented to all the finalists, at the conclusion of play, by AJGL Assistant Secretary Alastair Graham (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) who retires this year after 16 year in the Assistant Secretary's post.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - McEwan in final of Champion Of Champions event
Steven McEwan (Kilmarnock Barassie) claime dthe first spot in the 2005 Champion Of Champions Trophy final with an emphatic 7 & 6 victory over Gordon Munro at Caprington last week.
McEwan now awaits the winner of the tie between Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) and Stuart Robin (Prestwick St. Nicholas).

Ballochmyle have made the first move in the bid for a place in the final of the 2005 Ayrshire Junior Golf League Championship, with a 4-2 home win in the first leg of their match against West Kilbride.
Jordan Fleming, Gary Patterson and David Cunningham led by example with wins over Darren Kean, Martin Bell and Michael Roos respectively, whislt Craig Nicol ensured and advantage for the home side with a 3 & 2 win over Ross De Courcy in the fifth tie. Troon Welbeck and Loudoun will meet in the 2005 Ayrshire Summer League final.
With a narrow 3.5-2.5 advantage after their home match in the semi final, Welbeck travelled to Kilmarnock (Barassie) for what looked to be a perilous away leg. This did not however prove to be the case, Welbeck recording a notable 5 - 1 win on their visit to their near neighbours, for a 8.5 - 3.5 over all win in their semi final.

An under strength Ayrshire Boys team crashed to a 6.5 - 1.5 defeat in their latest west of Scotland inter county league match against Stirlingshire at Glenbervie on Sunday 28th August.
With heavy rain adn strong winds to content with, the Ayrshire side battled throughout the match, with three ties only being decided on the final hole.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Barassie secure Under 16 Final Spot
Kilmarnock Barassie will feature in both the Ayrshire Junior Golf League competition finals sheduled for Caprington on Sunday 4th September, after a 3.5 - 0.5 home win over St. Cuthbert secured a final place in the Under 16 Knockout Trophy.
In The Under 16 Knockout Trophy final, Kilmarnock Barassie will face Beith, whilst in the Wallace Thornton Trophy final, scheduled for the same day, the holders Barassie will face the challenge of West Kilbride. The two finals are scheduled to tee off at 10.00 a.m.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Beith reach Under 16 Knockout Trophy final.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Ballochmyle secure semi final spot against West Kilbride
Ballochmyle have secured the semi final place, after their play off with Prestwick St. Cuthbert in section A, and now face West Kilbride in the last four.
Leading by 5.5 - 0.5 from the first leg, Ballochmyle were defeated in the return at St. Cuthbert on Sunday, but the 3.5 - 2.5 win was not sufficient for the Prestwick club, Ballochmyle going through by 8 - 4 on aggregate.

JUNIOR ORDER OF MERIT - Mackay secures 2005 title
Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) is the 2005 Ayrshire Junior Order Of Merit Trophy winner, after the 20 qualifying events were completed this week.
Mackay's commanding lead was consolidated with a 3rd place at the Irvine Ravenspark Open, giving him a final total of 660 points, over 300 points aheaad of his nearest challenger, Stuart Robin (Prestwick St. Nicholas) who finished second with 375 points.
His win in the Scottish Boys Strokeplay helped the defending champion, Steven McEwan (Kilmarnock Barassie) to third place on 350 points, whilst a runners up place and a win in the final event at Kilbirnie helped Graeme Gimson (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) and Craig Mclaughlin (Largs) to 4th and 5th places respectively.
The final two places on the prize list went to John Shanks (Ardeer) and David Currie (Kilmarnock Barassie), Currie's total of 235 just edging malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) out of the prize list.
Prizes will be presented to the first 7 placed players at the Ayrshire Junior Golf League annual dinner in November.

Ardeer remain on course for a third successive AJGL Championship win after winning through against Irvine Ravenspark in the section D play off, for a semi final spot.

Despite the apparently convincing winning margin, the match was close throughout with 4 of the 6 matches finishing on the 17th green, on finishing at the final hole and the other match being concluded at the 16th.
The return match at Ravenspark on Wednesday 17th August saw a stirring fighback from Ravenspark, but despite their best efforts, their 4-2 win left them just short of the points required to oust the champions, Ardeer winning through to the semi finals on a 6.5 - 5.5 aggregate. The second leg was even closer than the first, with Ardeer securing two crucial half matches from two ties that were both two down with two holes to play.

THE TOM LEHMAN JUNIOR GOLF OPEN - 471 world beaters contest the event at Troon
The eighth annual competition for the Tom Lehman trophies, reputed to be the largest single day junior open event in the world, took place at the Troon Municipal courses on Tuesday 2nd August, with the total of 471 competitors being almost a fifth greater than the 2004 entry.
148 scratch to 12 handicapped boys contested the Tom Lehman trophy over the Darley course, an Ayrshire Junior Order Of Merit qualifying event.
GRAEME GIMSON (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) took the honours, winning the Tom Lehman Trophy for the boys with a scratch 73

JUNIOR ORDER OF MERIT -Mackay close to securing the title
Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) remains well on course to take the Junior Order Of Merit totle for the 2005 season, with only the results from Beith, Kilbirnie and Ravenspark to be processed.
Mackay is over 2oo points better off than his nearest challenger, whith a win at Ballochmyle boosting his points for the season.

AYRSHIRE BOYS MATCHPLAY - Euan Brown takes 2005 title at Prestwick
Euan Brown (Kilmarnock Barassie) is the 2005 Ayrshire Boys Matchplay champion, after edging out Cameron Gray (West Kilbride) by 2 & 1 in a close final, at a breezy Prestwick Golf Club on Saturday 13th August.
Brown got off to a great start, holing from 6 feet at the first for birdie and getting up and down from off the green at the par 3 second hole, to secure a two hole lead after 2.
At the third, Brown found rough on the right from the tee, and a poor lie contributed to a second shot which fell short, landing in the Pow Burn and out of bounds. With Gray safely near the green in 2, Brown conceded the hole and the match returned to one hole in Brown's favour.
The 4th was halved in par, and at the 5th, Brown struch his tee shot well, coming to rest some 30 feet right of the hole. With Gray looking likely to secure a par 3, Brown judged a severe right to left borrow to perfection, holing his putt for a birdie 2 to rerstore his two hole lead.
The 6th and 7th were halved in par, Gray in particular having a chance to win the 7th, but being thwarted by a fine recovery putt for par by Brown. Aty the 8th hole, brown found the rough on the left from the tee, and struggled make the putting surface in three. Gray on the other hand hit a superb drive which was duly rewarded when he secured his par 4 to reduce the deficit in the match to 1 again.
Despite leaving himself a testing 5 foot putt for par at the 9th, Gray matches Brown on the final hole of the outward half, to turn for home one hole behind.
Despite the difficult conditions, with a stiff south westerly breeze, Gray turned in level par figures, whilst Brown, with the exception of the 3rd hole, was one under par on the way out.
With Brown on the 10th green in 2, some 15 feet left of the hole, and Gray struggling after finding rough on the left from the tee, and his approach shots, Brown looked likely to extend his lead. Gray however had other ideas, playing a good chip to reach the green, from heavy rough, before securing an unlikely par 4 with a severely swinging left to right put from 30 feet which he holed. Brown's agonies were compounded when he struck his birdie putt 3 feet past the hole before his par putt struck the hole and spun out, giving Gray the hole and levelling the match for the first time since the opening tee shots.
Both players found sand from the tee at the short 11th, but whilst Brown took 2 to extricate his ball from the front bunker, Gray got up and down in two for a winning par, to go one up in the match for the first, and as it was later to prove, the only time in the match.
Despite the turn around in the match, Brown kept his cool, and immediately leveled the match with a birdie 4 at the 12th, after Gray bunkered his second shot and could only manage par. The status quo remained when both players did well to get up and down for par from off the green at the 13th.
Despite finding the rough on the right at the 14th from the tee, whilst his opponent found the fairway, brown got the better of the approach shots, hitting it to within 10 feet of theb hole whilst Gray was unfortunate to see his approach check and pull up 15 feet short of the hole.
Gray narrowly missed his birdie attempt, but Brown regained his lead in the match when he confidently holed his effort for 3.
Wit a wayward tee shot and a bunkered second, Brown struggled at the 15th, whilst Gray safely made the green in 2. The best Brown could do was a bogey 5, leaving Gray with two putts from 25 feet to level the match. Despite a good putt, on a tricky down slope, Gray saw his birdie effort run 3 feet past, and his return putt struck the hole and spun out, leaving the match still one hole in Brown's favour.
At the 16th, both players hit excellent approach shots, Gray finishing 12 feet from the hole with Brown a mere 4 feet away. Another good put from Gray just stayed above ground, whilst Brown confidently secured his birdie 3 to go dormie.
Gray continued to battle, and two excellent shots at the long 17th saw him safely on the green, some 15 feet from the hole. Brown meanwhile had been slightly bold with his approach, leaving him just off the back of the green, some 60 feet from the hole, with an extremely difficult shot to negotiate, to get the ball close. Despite his best efforts, brown could only get to within 12 feet from the hole in three shots. Gray's birdie putt shaved the hole and ran a little past, but he had no opportunity to putt for par, Brown stepping forward and holing another excellent putt, from around 12 feet, for par and a 2 & 1 victory.
With a better ball of around 5 under par, both players produced some excellent form in the final, and Grays figures in defeat, of 1 over par for 17 holes, were commendable and indicated the standard of the match, and the players involved.
At the conclusion of the match, prizes were awarded to both finalists, by Prestwick Golf Club Secretary, Ian Bunch, and the trophy was passed into the custody of the winner Euan Brown, for the next 12 months.

At the 16th, both players hit excellent approach shots, Gray finishing 12 feet from the hole with Brown a mere 4 feet away. Another good put from Gray just stayed above ground, whilst Brown confidently secured his birdie 3 to go dormie.
Gray continued to battle, and two excellent shots at the long 17th saw him safely on the green, some 15 feet from the hole. Brown meanwhile had been slightly bold with his approach, leaving him just off the back of the green, some 60 feet from the hole, with an extremely difficult shot to negotiate, to get the ball close. Despite his best efforts, brown could only get to within 12 feet from the hole in three shots. Gray's birdie putt shaved the hole and ran a little past, but he had no opportunity to putt for par, Brown stepping forward and holing another excellent putt, from around 12 feet, for par and a 2 & 1 victory.
With a better ball of around 5 under par, both players produced some excellent form in the final, and Grays figures in defeat, of 1 over par for 17 holes, were commendable and indicated the standard of the match, and the players involved.
At the conclusion of the match, prizes were awarded to both finalists, by Prestwick Golf Club Secretary, Ian Bunch, and the trophy was passed into the custody of the winner Euan Brown, for the next 12 months.
AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - hat trick of wins for McInally in Champion Of Champions event
Tommy McInally (Loudoun) gained a trio of successive wins in the Champion Of Champions Trophy competition defeating 2002 champion Tony Fraser (Annanhill) in the final at Royal Troon on Friday 12th August 2005.
In a perfect evening for golf, the players faced the challenge of the Championship tees for the final.
McInally made the first move, gaining a winning birdie 3 at the opening hole. A birdie 3 at the third hole levelled the match for Fraserbut a birdie 4 at the 4th immediately restored McInally's advantage.
Both players played poor third shots at the 6th hole, but it was McInally who recovered better, increasing his advantage to 2 holes.
A par 4 was enough for Fraser to reduce the defecit to one after 8 holes, and with the notorious postage stamp yielding birdie 2's to both players, the difference between the finalists was one hole.
Fraser maintained his pressure on McInally towards the turn, and when McInally lost the first of two balls during the match, on the 9th hole, the match result remained tied as the players turned for home.
As in the opening nine, McInally secured a birdie 3 at the 10th hole to go 1 up, but a second lost ball of the match, this time at the canteen area, resulted in the match being levelled again.
At the 14th, Fraser bunkered his tee shot giving McInally the task of securing a par 3, which he did.
Par was sufficient to hold a 2 hole advantage, and when the next two holes were halved, McInally emerged the winner by 4 & 3.

AYRSHIRE BOYS MATCHPLAY - Brown and Gray ease through to meet in the final
Cameron Gray (West Kilbride) and Euan Brown (Kilmarnock Barassie) will contest the 2005 Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Championship final on Saturday 13 August 2005, with a 4.00 p.m. start.
Gray eased through in his semi final match, winning by 4 & 3 against Craig McLaughlin (Largs) whilst Brown won the tussle between clubmates from Kilmarnock Barassie, Stuart Henderson and himself, with a comfortable 6 & 4 victory.
Gray and Brown meet in the final, which tees of at 4.00 p.m.. Spectators are welcome to come and support the finalists and watch what should prove an interesting match.
