Jack McDonald stormed into Friday afternoon’s semi final of
the Amateur Championship at Carnoustie with a crushing 6 & 5 victory over
Sean Towndrow (Southport & Ainsdale) in Friday morning’s quarter finals.
The Friday morning win put McDonald in the semi finals of the event for the second time in three years, having previously reached the penultimate round at Royal Troon in 2012.
McDonald went one up with a birdie three at the second, only
to see Towndrow birdie the third to level the match.
Towndrow bogeyed the fourth and McDonald birdied the fifth
to put the Ayrshire player two up, before a bogey six from McDonald at the
sixth hole reduced his lead to one again.
When Towndrow slipped up with a bogey four at the eighth,
McDonald took full advantage, following his winning par with a birdie three at
the ninth to turn for home with a three hole lead.
Further birdies from McDonald at the tenth and twelfth and a
bogey at the eleventh from Towndrow put McDonald six up with six to play, with
a half in threes at the thirteenth closing out the tie in McDonald’s favour
by 6 & 5.
In the Semi finals, McDonald faces Romaine Langasquet from France.
The other semi final is also a France versus Scotland
affair, with Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) playing Alexandre Daydou.
