THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - McDonald sails through to last 32

Jack McDonald
Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barrassie) comfortably negotiated the opening Matchplay round in the 2015 Amateur Championship on Wednesday, 17th June, defeating his opponent Frederick Wedel from the USA by 6 & 5 over the Carnoustie Championship course.

McDonald was never behind in his match, racing to a two hole lead after two, where pars were sufficient for him to win both holes.

With the exception of the 409 yard par four fourth hole, which was halved in double bogey sixes, McDonald negotiated all the holes in the outward half in par figures, which saw him turn for home with a five hole advantage, his opponent having dropped further shots at the fifth, seventh and ninth.

Pars on the opening two holes of the inward half saw McDonald extend his lead to six holes after Wedel bogeyed the eleventh.

McDonald’s only other deviation from par figures on the day came at the par five twelfth hole where he recorded a birdie four, which was matched by Wedel, and a par three at the thirteenth was good enough for McDonald to close out the match by 6 & 5.

In the last 32 on Thursday morning, McDonald tees off at 08.47 against Welshman David Boote from Walton Heath who beat former British and Scottish Boys Champion Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden) by 2 & 1 in round one.
