Kilmarnock Barassie youngster Jack McDonald made an impressive start to the Scottish Open Championship at Castle Stuart on Thursday, scoring better in round 1 than many of his illustrious countrymen from the professional ranks.
McDonald opened with a two under par round of 70, eight off the blistering pace set by leader Francesco Molinari, leaving him tied in 61st place alongside fellow Scots David Drysdale and Sandy Lyle.
McDonald's effort was one stroke better than Colin Montgomerie and three ahead of Paul Lawrie.
Felow Ayrshireman Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) did not fare so well, his eight over par return of 80 leaving him at the foot of the table in 156th place.
