THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Two in, one out for matchplay stages

Two of the three Ayrshire players in the 2010 Amateur Championship, being held at Muirfield and North Berwick this week, have progressed to the matchplay stages after qualifying over two rounds of strokeplay on Monday & Tuesday.

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), who led the qualifying after a four under par first round at North Berwick, shot a three over par 74 over Muirfield on day two for a 141 total (-1) and a share of 27th place.

His score secured Stewart a place in round 2 of the matchplay where he will face Philipp Westermann (Germany) on Wednesday.

Also grabbing a slot in the matchplay was Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle) who followed his level par first round of 71 with a second round 72 for a 143 total (+1) to tie for 57th place, right on the eventual cut score.

In the first round of the matchplay Chris Harkins will face Elias Bertheussen (Norway) on Wednesday morning, with the winner scheduled to play Andrea Pavan (Italy) in the second round on Wednesday afternoon.

After a four over par opening round, Steven McEwan (Caprington) was struggling to make the cut but a second round of 70 gave him a 36 hole total of 145 which ultimately left him only two shots adrigft of securing a place in the matchplay stages.
