SCOTTISH MEN'S AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire lose out in semi finals at Powfoot.

The Ayrshire team lost out in the semi finals of the 2022 Scottish men's Area Team Championship on Saturday the 3rd of September at Powfoot GC, going down by 5.5 - 3.5 to Perth & Kinross, who in turn lost to North East in the final on Sunday the 4th of September.

In Saturday's semi final, the foursomes proved to be crucial in preventing Ayrshire adding to their three previous wins in the event in 1986, 2006 and 2015, with the county side losing the series of morning matches by 3 - 0 to leave a difficult task in the afternoon singles.

Though the Turnberry pairing of Scott Brown and Craig Telfer lost by 5 & 4 to Steven Park & Lewis Seath. the other two ties, which featured John Shanks (Irvine) & Steven McEwan (Caprington) against Ewan Farquharson & Kenneth Macaskill and the Royal Troon pairing of Michael Smyth & Blair Morton against Glen Campbell & Scott Michie, both finished as single hole losses on the final green.

Despite the setback of the morning scorers, the Ayrshire team did all they could to get back into the match but ultimately fell just short, taking the afternoon singles 3.5 - 2.5 for an overall match score of 5.5 - 3.5 in favour of Perth & Kinross.

John Shanks led the way for Ayrshire with a 5 & 4 win over Ewan Farquharson, and although Steven McEwan lost to Lewis Seath by 5 & 3, the next two ties were won by Ayrshire , Blair Morton beating Keneth Macaskill by 2 holes and Scott Brown winning by 3 & 2 over Steven Park.

Ayrshire's hopes were ended when Craig telfer was beaten 7 & 6 by Glenn Campbell, and with the match win guaranteed for Perth & Kinross, the final tie between Michael Smyth and Scott Michie was agreed as a half, to give the final score of 5.5 - 3.5.
