MEASURING DEVICES - Whats the story ?

After some discussion and rumour following the recent Ayrshire Club Championship at Irvine Ravenspark, and the use of measuring devices by players, it may be useful to clarify the position.

County events generally adopt the local rules of the club or course at which the event is run.

In terms of Decision 14-3/0.5 in the 2006-2007 Decisions On The Rules Of Golf, a Committee may establish a local rule permitting the use of devices that measure distance only.
In the absence of such a local rule, the use of such equipment would be a breach of rule 14-3.

Irvine Ravenspark have such a local rule in place and consequently the use of such devices were permitted in the event held there.

At least one competitor, prior to playing, approached the committee organising the event to clarify the use of such equipment during the competition, and it was confirmed that the use of such devices would be permissable during th event.

Hope this clarifies any misconceptions or confusion with regard to the competition concerned.
