AYRSHIRE SCRATCH LEAGUES - Girvan win third successive title

Girvan have won their third successive divisional title in the Ayrshire Scratch Leagues following a 5.5 - 0.5 win over Troon St Meddans in their final match of the campaign recently.

The south Ayrshire club now move into Division 2 for the 2014 season, whilst the result also sent Troon St Meddans into Division 4 for the 2014 season, on tie difference.

All matches in the five leagues have now been completed for 2013.

In DIVISION 2, Largs closed with a 3 - 3 draw at home to Caprington whilst in DIVISION 3, Kilbirnie beat new Cumnock 4 - 2 at home and earned a 3 - 3 draw in the corresponding away match, which combined with a 3.5 - 2.5 home win over Prestwick St Nicholas left Kilbirnie as runners up to Girvan in Division 3.

 Ideally the Scratch Leagues would benefit from another five member clubs taking part, which would take each league to 6 teams.

WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUES - Ayrshire win West Of Scotland Youths title at Buchanan Castle, inspired by Peter Alliss

The Ayrshire Youths team are the 2013 West Of Scotland Inter County champions following a nail biting 4.5 – 3.5 win in their final match of the campaign on Sunday 13^th October, away to Stirlingshire at Buchanan Castle, with the help of an inspirational message from golf legend Peter Alliss.

In winning the match, the Ayrshire side completed the five match series undefeated.

In the mid stage of the match, Ayrshire looked to be cruising to victory but the home side had other ideas and fought back to leave the result in doubt right up to the final two ties.

Greg Vernon got Ayrshire’s first point on the board with a 7 & 5 win and this was added to with wins for both Stuart Easton & Robbie Fitzpatrick, Easton closing out his tie with a superb approach to within three feet at the seventeenth, and what was to prove a very important half match by Greg Telfer in the lead tie.

Liam Haldane with a 2 & 1 win and Stuart Irving with a 6 & 5 result kept Stirlingshire’s hopes alive, leaving the match poised at  3.5 – 2.5 for Ayrshire with two ties remaining on the course.

With Craig Telfer behind in the last tie, it looked likely that the point required for a win for Ayrshire lay in the hands of Gary Morrison, and as it was Morrison became the hero of the hour, closing out his match with successive birdies at the seventeenth and eighteenth for a two hole victory to give Ayrshire the win required to secure the title.

In the A League on Sunday, Ayrshire were involved in an absorbing match at West Kilbride, where four out of the eight ties finished all square, Ayrshire ran out narrow winners against Stirlingshire by 5 – 3, to finish their five matches this season with two successive wins.  In three out of the four shared ties, Ayrshire came from behind to secure a half point.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Final two titles of the season decided

The two outstanding finals of the Ayrshire Junior Golf League season were completed on Sunday 6th October at Ayr Belleisle GC, following their postponement last month due to weather conditions.

The final of the scratch competition for the WALLACE THORNTON TROPHY feature Kilmarnock Barassie and Irvine golf clubs and it proved to be a very exciting final, ending in a 2 - 2 draw before progressing to a sudden death play off to decide the destination of the trophy.

In the subsequent play off, Irvine nominated Stuart Easton and Kilmarnock Barassie nominated Callum Gorrie do represent their respective clubs.

 

At the first play off hole, Stuart Easton drove into the trees on the left but managed to find a path back to the fairway in two, whilst Callum Gorrie found the fairway from the tee but put his second shot with a fairway wood into the greenside bunker on the left of the par five opening hole at Belleisle.

 

Stuart Easton hit a good recovery rescue wood onto the green although he was still a long way from the hole, and Callum Gorrie followed this with a fine bunker shot to around 10 feet from the hole.

 

Stuart Easton's effort for a birdie four from distance was unsuccessful leaving Callum Gorrie with a 10 foot put for a winning birdie four. The Kilmarnock Barassie player successfully converted his putt to give his team the Wallace Thornton Trophy for 2013 at the first extra hole.

 

The other final played on Sunday 6th October was the UNDER 16 KNOCKOUT TROPHY which featured teams from Ayr Belleisle and Loudoun.

Loudoun took two of the ties comfortably with the other two being decided on the final green. The Ayr Belleisle side were only able to win one of these ties and lose the other, giving Loudoun the Under 16 title for 2013 with a 3 - 1 win in the match.
