SCOTTISH SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP - Mair, Fulker & Miller stay in touch with one round to go

Ayrshire have three players in the top six places after two rounds of the 2011 Scottish Seniors Strokeplay Championship, being held at Irvine (Bogside) this week.

Gordon Mair of the host club now leads the Ayrshire challenge after two rounds, his 72 on Thursday along with his opening 75 giving him a total of 147 and leaving him just one stroke behind the tournament leader John Fraser (Royal Burgess).

After leading the field with his first round 70, Robbie Fulker (Kilmarnock Barassie) slipped back a little with a second round 78, but is still well positioned, just two off the pace.

Ayrshire President David J Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) added a second round 76 to his opening 74 for a 150 total, to leave him still in with a chance of the title with one round to go.

The cut fell at 159, with Alan Harrington (154), David Brown (157) and John Ashton (159) from Ayrshire clubs also booking a place in the final days play on Friday.

One of the most notable qualifiers after Thursdays second round must be Rich Tolly from the United States Of America. Opening with a 77 on Wednesday, Tolly was hampered by an injury to his big toe which resulted in medical treatment and the on course first aiders being required to dress his toe prior to his second round. The dressing meant that Tolly could not get his golf shoe on so he completed an impressive round of 74 on Thursday, for a championship total of 151, wearing a golf shoe on one foot shoe and an open toed sandal on his injured foot. It remains to be seen if he will set a new trend in golfing footwear if he has a similarly good score with his unconventional attire on Friday.
