AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Champions ousted in nailbiting under 16 quarter final.

West Kilbride, winners of the Under 16 Knockout Trophy in 2004, relinquished their title in dramatic fashion on Monday, 27th June, losing out by the narrowest of margins to the club whom they defeated in last seasons final of the competition, Prestwick St. Cuthbert.

The match, played at St. Cuthbert, finished drawn at 2-2. In the lead tie, Stephen McConnell put the home side ahaed with a 6&4 win over Michael Roos, but the advantage was cancelled out when Grant Weir levelled the match for the visitors, beating A. Miller of the home club by the same 6&4 margin.

With the other two matches, between G. McIlloney and Ross De Courcy, and D. Brown and Kieran Howie both finishing level after 18 holes, the countback score in the match was also tied at 10-10.

The rules of the competition dictated that the lead match play off over sudden death holes, and when McConnell bunkered his approach to the first play off hole, whilst Roos reached the green, advantage seemed to be with the visitors.

Unfortunately for the visitors this did not prove to be the case, a three putt by Roos being compounded when McConnell got up and down from the bunker to save par and take the match for St. Cuthbert.
