CHARLIE McGREGOR - Junior golf stalwart passes away

Many in Ayrshire golfing circles will be saddened by the news that Charlie McGregor, a stalwart of junior golf in Ayrshire, passed away on Saturday morning, the 1st of April 2023 at the age of 84.

A long time member and Past Captain of the Irvine Ravenspark Golf Club, Charlie's working life as well as his recreational time was spent in golf, being employed for many years in the Wilson factory in Irvine, in the production of golf equipment.

Charlie was the driving force behind the development of the junior section of his home club for many years, leading the club team to their two successes in the Ayrshire Junior Golf League Championship in 1987, when his son sunk the winning putt, and in 2002.

In recognition of his contribution to junior golf in Ayrshire, and the Ayrshire Junior Golf League in particular, Charlie was elected an Honorary member of the Ayrshire Junior Golf league at the AGM in 2000, following in the footsteps of his uncle Matt McGregor, who was given the same honour in 1977.

Charlie suffered health issues over the last seven years and although not entirely unexpected, nevertheless his passing is a very sad loss to the Ayrshire golfing fraternity, where he will be remembered fondly by many as a good friend.

Sincere condolences from all at the Ayrshire Golf Association is extended to Charlie's family and close friends at this sad time.
