Ayrshire take runners up spot in Glasgow Youths Event

The Ayrshire 3 man team of Euan Brown, Jamie Mackay (both Kilmarnock Barassie) and John Shanks (Ardeer) came a very creditable second at the annual Glasgow Youths Tournament at Ralston G.C on Saturday 9th Sept.

With 2 out of 3 scores counting, Ayrshire lay third on 139 after the morning round, the scores of Brown (70) and Shanks (69) giving the Ayrshire team a one under par total.

The defending champions Northumberland led after round one, with lead player Simon Lee carding a 6 under par 64.

With conditions warm and humid, scores were in the main higher in the afternoon as the players tired.

A 143 afternoon total with counting scores from Mackay (70) and Shanks (73) was enough for Ayrshire to secure second spot in the overall competition, and leapfrog Argyll, who were relegated down to 4th place after a splendid 2nd round by Stirling. Northumberland retained their title with an 8 shot victory (274)

In the individual event, a 2 over par total of 142 from John Shanks saw him secure 6th place, just missing out on an individual prize.
