AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Gray takes Champion Of Champions Trophy

Cameron Gray (West Kilbride), the former Ayrshire Boys Champion captured the 2004 Ayrshire Junior Golf League Champion Of Champions title at Largs on Sunday 12 September in a close final against his Ayrshire boys teammate, Jamie Mackay (Troon St. Meddans).

The match opened well for Gray, a half in par threes at the first being followed by a birdie3 at the second, to give Gray a one hole lead.

The third hole of the match was somewhat bizarre, Gray going out of bounds, and MacKay following that with a second shot which resulted in the head of his seven iron following the ball down the fairway. MacKay managed to recover to take the hole with a double bogey 6, and square the match, and a par 3 at the following hole was sufficient for MacKay to take the lead for the first time. MacKay's 7 iron did not make such a good recovery, and was sidelined for the rest of the match.

Gray squared the match with a par at the 6th, and, in what proved to be an important stage of the match, pars at the 8th and 9th holes were sufficient to win both holes for Gray, giving him a 2 hole lead at the turn.

A birdie 3 at the 401 yard 10th hole extended Gray's lead, but MacKay struck back immediately, par 4 at 11 and birdie 4 at 12 giving him successive wins and reducing the deficit to one hole.

Despite both players having chances, Gray maintained his 1 hole advantage through 15, and a birdie 3 at the 330 yard 16th hole gave him a decisive 2 hole lead with 2 to play.

The match concluded on the penultimate hole, a half in par 4's giving Cameron Gray the trophy and the title with a 2 & 1 winning margin.

Both players were presented with mementoes at the conclusion of play by Ayrshire Junior Golf League Chairman, Gordon Cunningham of Largs G.C.
