SCOTTISH WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP - Freya Russell loses out in final for second successive year

Freya Russell (Royal Troon) lost out in the final of the Scottish Women’s Championship for a second successive year on Sunday the 25th of May when the 2025 championship reached its conclusion at Western Gailes Golf Club, who were hosting the national championship for the first time.

In the morning semi-finals Freya won an all-Ayrshire match against Hannah Ounap (Loudoun), fighting back to win the last four holes for a single hole victory in the match.

In the final Freya faced Susan Woodhouse (East Kilbride), hoping to go one better that in 2024 when she lost the final at Nairn Dunbar to Lorna McClymont.

With strong gusting winds in the afternoon, both players produced some impressive golf and by the turn Susan Woodhouse lead by two holes.

In the inward nine Woodhouse looked to be comfortably progressing to the title with a three-hole lead with four to play, but again Freya Russell showed her fighting spirit, winning the sixteenth and seventeenth to keep the pressure on going to the last hole.

Despite the mounting pressure Woodhouse hit a fine tee shot at the last and played her approach to ten feet from the pin from where she holed a title winning birdie putt to take the national title and consign Freya Russell to a second successive runner up spot in the event.
