SCOTTISH MEN'S AREA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Format of national event to change from 2022

The format of the Scottish Men's Area Team Championship will change from 2022 following an overwhelming vote to alter the format amongst the 16 Area Associations this week.

The present one weekend format for the competition encompasing both strokeplay and matchplay, which Ayrshire last won in 2015, has been in place for ten years, but a recent meeting of the Area Associations decided to revert back to a qualifying section format of purely matchplay golf played throughout the season and culminating in a weekend semi final and final event.

A sub committee has been set up to formulate a detailed format going forward, for presentation and agreement with the sixteen Area Associations later this year.

The 2021 championship is scheduled to take place in Inverness in early September 2021 and will continue in the present format whilst the new championship format is agreed for 2022.

COVID 19 UPDATE - Courses remain open under latest restrictions, but return to two ball play only

Scottish Golf have clarified that golf courses can remain open for play, following the Scottish Government announcement on Monday 4th January of tighter restrictions, though play will return to a maximum of two players per tee time from a maximum of two households.

The full Scottish Golf update reads :-

As we turn the corner on an extremely difficult 2020, starting 2021 with additional restrictions and further uncertainty is not how anyone wanted to begin the new year.

Following today’s announcement from the First Minister and with an understanding that our affiliated clubs will need to make some adjustments to their business operations, we wanted to provide all clubs with the information we have available to us at present.

As has been the case throughout the pandemic, we have worked alongside both sportscotland and The Scottish Government to demonstrate that golf is a sport that can be played outdoors with physical distancing and increased safety measures in place. We are pleased that this continues to be recognised and from 00.01 on Tuesday 5th January:

Golf courses can remain open for play with a maximum of two players from up to two households

Golfers must stay close to home, travel only for essential purposes and in line with the new legislation

We are continuing to seek further clarification on a number of the wider aspects for sport from our partners at sportscotland and Scottish Government and as soon as we have sufficient detail with which to work, our more detailed guidance will be updated. We currently envisage being in a position to provide a more in-depth update for all affiliated clubs within the next 24 hours.

Scottish Golf asks that all golf clubs and golfers adhere to the new guidance with the same spirit and integrity that has been shown throughout the last year to ensure we can all continue to benefit from playing golf through this new period of restrictions.

You can stay up to date on all the latest information on our dedicated COVID-19, available via the Scottish Golf website.

Kind Regards,

Karin Sharp, Chief Operating Officer, Scottish Golf

HAPPY NEW YEAR - Looking forward to county events in Ayrshire in 2021

With the advent of the new year, it is hoped that Ten Ayrshire Golf Association and member clubs can look forward to a full  calendar of events in the 2021 season, avoiding the disruption of 2020 which saw all county events cancelled and many club competitions fall by the wayside too.

Although the 2021 Ayrshire Golf Association Annual Dinner, normally held in February,  is already a casualty due to the lack of events in 2020 and the ongoing restrictions on indoor gatherings, planning is well under way for the county golf events in 2021, as we anticipate a return to a full county programme.

The provisional list of county competitions and fixtures is reproduced below.

The venues for these fixtures are subject to final confirmation.

Member clubs will be contacted soon to confirm the dates and arrangements for the open competitions that count towards the Doc Thom Ayrshire Order of Merit and the Junior Order of Merit, with the full list of events being circulated in due course.
