Former Ayrshire Boys Champion Colin Robinson from Largs has been making headlines along with his teammates in the John A Logan College golf team in the USA recently.

For the eighth time in the last 10 years, the John A. Logan College men’s golf team has won the Region 24 postseason tournament, held this year at Stone Wolf Golf Course in Fairview Heights.
The Vols cruised to a 29-stroke victory over runner-up, Rend Lake. Logan’s two-day total covering 54 holes was 914 (299, 313, 302). The Warriors checked in at 943 (312, 318, 313). Illinois Central College of East Peoria was third at 952 and Parkland was fourth at 955.
Other teams participating included: Lewis & Clark, Lincoln, Danville, Kaskaskia and Shawnee.
Medalist honors went to Logan sophomore Filip Timmerman, who squeaked past freshman teammate, Colin Robinson. Timmerman turned in three identical rounds of 73 for a total of 219. Robinson had a 70 in the opening round Sunday, but struggled in the middle round, carding a 77. He finished with a round of 73 for a combined score of 220.
Rend Lake’s Matt Walton was third overall at 231 and Benton native Bryce Doughty of the Vols tied for fourth at 233 with Illinois Central’s Sam Norbom.
“It’s always great to win the regional,” said Vols head coach Tom Ferris, again named Region 24 Coach of the Year. “We accomplished the goal that we set out to do. It was tough conditions – wet and cold. We did what we had to do to win. Even though we didn’t play our best, we were able to get the victory.”
Timmerman said winning the regional meant a lot to him.
“Last year, I got second to Marcelo (Vols’ teammate Rozo), so I really wanted to win it this time. I knew it would be tough because Colin Robinson was playing very well. Fortunately for me, my short game carried me through. I know how Colin feels. I was in his spot. And I know he’s kind of mad right now, but somebody has to win. Today, it was me.”
Robinson said he was pleased with the way he played Sunday, but feels he should have performed better Monday.
“The middle round or first round Monday was disappointing to me, but there’s always something to work on, I guess.”
Even though it is a friendly rivalry among teammates, Robinson admitted that he wanted to beat his buddy, Timmerman, in the worst way.
“You don’t play to finish second. You play to win,” he said. “Every single shot, I was looking back at him and he was looking over at me. We were feeding off each other. If we carry that over to nationals, I see no reason we can’t win it.”
Ferris said the goal now is for the Vols to improve over the next two weeks and get ready for the national tournament in Scottsboro, Ala.
“We’re going to have to do some hard work to get ready,” he said. “This (winning Region 24) is just the first step. Our freshmen have to step it up if we’re going to have a shot at placing at nationals.”
Timmerman said the Vols are capable of great things at the national meet.
“Every player on this team can shoot under par,” he said. “Of course, I want to win the individual title. That is a goal, but my first goal is for us to win as a team.”
