SCOTTISH LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP - Ayrshire hopes ended in last 16

Ayrshire's lone qualifier for the matchplay stages of the 2011 Scottish ladies Championship, being played at Machrihanish this week, bowed out of the competition in the second round of matchplay on Thursday afternoon.

Reigning Ayrshire County Champion Rachael McQueen (Troon Ladies) beat Cara Gruber (Royal Dornoch) by 5 & 4 in the morning to book her place in the last 16 against Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), who herself was bidding for a third successive appearance in the final of the national championship, having lost in the final in 2009 and 2010.

In the last 16 match, Kenney forged a three hole lead before McQueen fought back to reduce the deficit to just one hole. The fighback could not be sustained however, with Kenney eventually winning the tie by 3 & 2.

The matchplay continues on Friday with the final scheduled to take place on Saturday morning.
