Ayrshire has received an appeal for assistance from Gordon Rodger, Chief Marshal for the 2009 Open Golf Championship at Turnberry.
Although many club members will already have volunteered to assist through their own clubs, here is a great opportunity for members of clubs throughout Ayrshire to contribute to the smooth running and success of the worlds greatest golf championship when it is played in Ayrshire next month.
As many local golfers who have had the good fortune to marshal at The Open iin the past will no doubt testify, involvemet in the championship in this way is a unique way of seeing the championship itself whilst helping out in a very practical way.
The letter from Gordon Rodger, with contact details for those who are interested, is reproduced below.
Dear Member
THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 – TURNBERRY
With only a month until the start of the Championship, various areas of planning are progressing well.
As Chief Marshal, I, and my Deputy, Donald Love, are currently recruiting marshals from many golf clubs local to Turnberry, with tremendous support being demonstrated throughout Ayrshire. Unfortunately, we are still experiencing a shortfall in numbers which is of concern.
While traditionally one golf club has had responsibility for marshalling one hole and applications from individuals have been declined, in light of this shortfall, we are currently reviewing this position.
If any member of an Ayrshire Golf Club, affiliated to your association, is interested in volunteering on an individual basis, their assistance would be greatly appreciated. Further details can be obtained from our Championship office on telephone 01655 332929.
We do hope some of your membership will be in a position to take up this opportunity of assisting inside the ropes at a major championship.
Turnberry is rightly proud of its Open heritage and we look forward to putting on a good show for our guests from around the world.
Kind regards.
Yours sincerely
D. G. Rodger
