Scotland’s men’s and boys’ teams will both contest the semi-finals of their respective European Amateur Team Championships tomorrow after doing the double in their last eight matches in Finland and Norway.
The men overcame Sweden 4.5 – 2.5 thanks to closing singles wins from St Andrews Links Trophy winner Grant Forrest and Amateur Champion Grant Forrest, while the boys snatched a dramatic victory over the host nation with George Burns the hero after a birdie at the first extra hole of his deciding tie.
Forrest and Neil led the way with a superb 5&4 foursomes win in the opening morning match over their Swedes, before Graeme Robertson and Jack McDonald put the Scots two nil after a marathon match which was settled at the 24th.
Sweden hit back with Oscar Bergqvist beating Robertson 3&2, while James Ross also went down to Hannes Ronnelblad. The matched remained level after Jamie Savage earned a half with Tobias Eden, before Scotland’s in form duo of Forrest and Neil kept the side on track to reach their second successive final.
The Boys team were all square after the morning foursomes and fell 3-1 behind after Bob MacIntyre and Murray Naysmith were well beaten in the opening singles ties. Reigning Scottish Boys Champion Ewen Ferguson gave the Scots hope with a well-earned 2&1 win and Ben Kinsley levelled things with an emphatic 5&4 win.
That set the stage for Williamwood’s George Burns to clinch the match in dramatic fashion, with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th to go to extra holes before a birdie at the 19th to oust Andreas Halvorsen.
The men take on Spain for a place in the final while England face Ireland Scotland's boys are up against Sweden in their semi final match.
