John Shanks (Ardeer) is the 2006 Ayrshire Boys Golf Champion after edging out defending champion, Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) by a single shot in the 36 hole event held at Largs Golf Club on Thursday 3rd August.
Shanks led from the front, recording the equal best morning round of level par 70, alongside Mackay and Craig McLaughlin (Largs).
In the afternoon, Shanks was the first of the trio to complete his round, adding a one over par 71 for a total of 141.
Mackay just failed to become the first player to retain the title since Hugh McKibbin in 1991, returning a two over par 72 in the afternoon, to come up one short of Shanks' total on 142.
McLaughlin was unable to produce his morning form in the afternoon, returning a 75 for a 145 total and an ultimate third place in the event.
Best round of the day was returned by former champion and Scottish Boys internationalist, Cameron Gray (West Kilbride) who followed a disappointing 79 in the morning with a fine two under par 68 in the afternooon, giving him a fourth place in the competition.
