THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - McDonald well placed after opening round of strokeplay

Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) is well placed in his bid to qualify for the matchplay stages of the 2015 Amateur Championship, being played this week at Carnoustie and Panmure.

In his opening round on Monday, 15th June, McDonald negotiated the longer Carnoustie Championship course in level par 72 to lie in equal 43rd place.

The top 64 players and ties after two rounds of strokeplay qualifying progress to the matchplay stages on Wednesday.

Leader after the first round is Englishman Alfie Plant who went round the Panmure course in an impressive seven under par.

The only other Ayrshire player in the field, Euan Walker (Kilmanrock Barassie) had a torrid day, finishing on 10 over par after an 82 over the Carnoustie Championship course.

The second round of strokeplay qualifying is scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, 16th June.
