It is with deep regret that we have to advise that Ayrshire Golf Association Executive member Cliff Francis passed away this morning, Wednesday 29 October 2014.
A retired Chief Inspector with Strathclyde Police, Cliff was an AGA Executive member since 2009 and was of course well known throughout the county with his invaluable contribution to both the boys team and our area championships, and also through his years of work on behalf of his home club Troon Welbeck, as a Past Captain and Club Secretary.
Cliff approached his illness over the last year or so with courage and determination, and will be sadly missed by friends and colleagues, but will be remembered for his wit and friendship by many in the Ayrshire golf community and beyond..
Any funeral arrangements will be advised as soon as these become available.
The thoughts of everyone within the Ayrshire Golf Association are with Cliff's wife and family at this very sad time.

Ayrshire and indeed, society in general is much diminished by the passing of Cliff Francis. Although a keen golfer myself, despite the number of years I knew him, I never had the privilege of golfing with him. I knew him as a colleague in Strathclyde Police and as an eminently personable, practicle and honest individual who knew his own mind. He always sought the story behind the story which was generally where the truth lay. Not adverse to a bit of mischief, he was quick to laugh and made others laugh easily. I only met Cliff on rare occasions after he retired, but the conversation always picked up where it left off and there was no hesitation or awkwardness. I, and many others, will miss him.
This is Graeme, Cliff son. My little brother Charlie, our Mum Norma and Myself were all by his side at the end. He passed away in his own bed which was his wish. The NHS a have been utterly superb this last 10 months and we can't praise them highly enough.
He absolutely loved golf, love working on the Ayrshire committee, loved refereeing matches and loved Troon Welbeck golf club.....I'm not so sure he loved his putting though!!!
The support we have had from friends since he passed has been overwhelming and a huge comfort
The cremation will at at 10am on Wednesday the 5th at Holmsford Bridge crematorium in Greghorn with the wake at the Southbeach hotel in Troon. We will be having a donation which will be going to troon lifeboat which was our adams favourite charity to give to.
