SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Four from seven survive first round hurdle as Macneal and Smith march on to round 3

The second day of the Scottish Amateur Championship at Royal Dornoch saw four of the seven remaining Ayrshire players to start thir bid for the title succesfully reach round 2, whilst two Ayrshire players secured their places in the third round.

Former Scottish Boys Champion David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) was first off in the morning and won through to round 2 with a 4 & 3 win over David Docherty (Paisley). In the second round on Wednesday Wilson will face Lewis Mutch (Duff House Royal).

Third seed Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) succesfully negotiated round 1, beating Cameron Nelson (Nairn) by 2 & 1 to set up a second round match with Richard Johnston (Glenbervie)

The first round all Ayrshire tie between Colin Haddow (Western Gailes) and David Strachan (Turnberry) saw Strachan edge through to round 2 by one hole, where he will play Grant Forrest (Craigielaw).

Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) faced a stiff test against Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) and bowed outt on the end of a 4 & 3 defeat. David McLennan (Largs) also made a first round exit, losing 5 & 3 to John Duff (Newmacher).

The last Ayrshire player to get his championship bid under way was Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) who raced into round 2 with a 7 & 5 win over Chris Gilbert (McDonald). Smyth faces Allan McDonald (Crow Wood) in round 2.

The first few second round matches began in the mid afternoon on Tuesday and Charlie Macneal (Troon Welbeck) was the first of the local players to secure a third round bearth, beating Andrew Burgess (Nairn) by 4 & 3 to set up his next match on Wednesday against Chris Robb (Meldrum House).

Macneal was soon followed into round 3 by his clubmate Marc Smith who beat Stewart Burke (Ranfurly Castle) by 2 & 1. Smith now faces Scott Crichton (Aberdour) in Wednesday's third round match.

The only other Ayrshire player to play his second round match on Tuesday was Steven Stamper (Turnberry) who faced a difficult match against fourth seed Paul Ferrier (Baberton). Despite putting up a good performance, Stamper lost out to Ferrier by 3 & 2.

The remaininf second round matches and all the third round ties are scheduled to be completed on Wednesday
