SCOTTSIH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Stewart brings title to Ayrshire for first time in 16 years

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) is the 2008 Scottish Boys Champion after a commanding 8 & 7 win in the 36 hole final at Southerness on Saturday.

One up after 15 against Paul Shields (Kirkhill) in the morning round, Stewart finished impressively over the closing holes winning the last three, including the 18th courtesy of a second successive eagle this week, to take a four hole lead into the afternoon.

Stewart stamped his authority on the match at the opening hole of the afternoon where a birdie at the first put him further in front with a lead which was extended to 6 holes when Stewart also took the second with a par.

Despite Shields recording two successive birdies in the middle of the second round, they were only sufficient for halved holes and Stewart stormed to a 7 & 5 overall win.

LIKE TO CADDIE FOR THE STARS OF THE FUTURE - Young caddies sought to assist with international event in June

Glasgow Gailes Golf Club will host the 2008 Palmer Cup, which is a collegiate match, inaugurated in 1997, and contested between the United States of America and Europe, between 24th and 27th June this year.

The last time the event was played in Britain was at Prestwick Golf Club in 2006. Other previous venues, in what is undoubtedly a prestige event, have included Bay Hill, Florida, The Old and New Courses at St. Andrews, The Honors Course, Chattanooga, Royal Liverpool (Hoylake), Baltusrol, Kiawa Island and Ballybunnion, amongst others.

Participants in previous years have included Luke Donald of England US Amateur Champion Ritchie Ramsay from Scotland, European and Open Champion Ben Curtis.

The organisers have asked that approaches be made to clubs in Ayrshire, to recruit interested junior golfers to act as caddies for the event.

There will be a total of 16 caddies required, one for each competitor, and a draw will take place to match caddies with players. Caddies will remain with their allocated player throughout the 4 days of the event.

REQUIREMENTS

It is essential that successful applicants will be available for ALL FOUR DAYS.

Ideally, applicants will be between 15 and 18 years of age

Applicants should be a good standard of golfer (preferably single figure handicap)

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Tuesday 24 June – Practice Day
Wednesday 25 June – College Am Event
Thursday 26 June – Palmer Cup matches (36 holes)
Friday 37 June – Palmer Cup matches (36 holes)

Once again there will be a level of monetary payment for those selected to caddie in the event.
Another obvious benefit to those involved will be their participation in a major event, being on the range and on the course with the best players and coaches from the European and United States colleges circuits.

There will also be a junior coaching clinic on the afternoon of Tuesday 24 June.

In addition, the possibility of the competing players and the caddies playing golf together on Monday 23 June is being investigated.

This event provides a great opportunity to local junior golfers to be involved in a top event with the best players.

Interest in participation is expected to be high, and consequently an early return of the application forms is advised

Application forms can be obtained from Junior Convenors of Ayrshire Junior Golf League clubs or direct from Alasdair Malcolm at aj-malcolm@fsmail.net

SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Stewart carries Ayrshire banner into final

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) has secured his place in the final of the 2008 Scottish Boys Championship at Southerness on Saturday 12 April, where he will meet Paul Shields (Kirkhill) in the 36 hole final.

Stewart beat Mark Bookless (Sandyhills) by 3 & 2 in the quarter finals and edged through by 2 holes in the semi final against fellow internationalist David law (Hazelhead), courtesy of a 3 - 3 finish to his round, an eagle on the final hole closing out his opponent.

Stewart becomes the first Ayrshire player to grace the final since Alan Reid (Kilmarnock Barassie) took the title at West Kilbride in 1992, and will be hoping to win the trophy and emulate the only Troon Welbeck member to win the boys title, Andrew McQueen, who won back in 1985 beating clubmate Fraser McCulloch in the final.

The final tees of at 0830 on saturday morning and the best wishes of all members of The Ayrshire Golf Association go to Michael in his bid for the Scottish Boys title.

ROBERT JAMIESON - Ayrshire golf stunned by tragic death

Ayrshire golf is in mourning after the tragic death of 18 year old Loudoun Gowf Club member Robert Jamieson in a three-car accident on the A91 in Fife around 10.00 p.m. on Tuesday 11 March, which happened between Guardbridge and St Andrews.
The crash also claimed the life of fellow Elmwood College student Duncan Beaton from the Forfar area.

A woman driver was seriously injured and another motorist hurt.
Robert - pictured with fellow Loudoun junior team members Craig Goodwin, Michael Cameron and Darren Tannock - was a leading light in the junior section at Loudoun and was a member of the team who won the Andrew D. Nimmo Trophy during the Ayrshire Boys Team Championship competition in both 2006 and 2007.
On behalf of The Ayrshire Golf Association,
Sincere sympathy is extended to Robert's family, friends and clubmates at this time and no doubt the thoughts of many of the golfing community in Ayrshire and beyond will be with those closest to Robert, and his young friend Duncan.
