AYRSHIRE BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - First Lygate Trophy win for Irvine whilst Ballochmyle score handicap trophy hat trick

Irvine Golf Club won the Matt Lygate Trophy, and the title of Ayrshire Boys Team Champions, for the first time in the history of the competition on Sunday 20th April 2014 when the traditional opener to the Ayrshire Golf Association season took place at Loudoun Gowf Club.
The winning Irvine team of
Stuart Easton, Jack Thomas, Ross McDonald & Scott Howat
with Ayrshire Golf Association President Milton Murray

The competition, first played in 1988, attracted an entry from 12 local clubs and in addition to Irvine's first win, another notable achievement was recorded by Ballochmyle who became the first club to win the Andrew D Nimmo Trophy for the best net team score for a third successive season.

Although the course was in very nice condition and the weather conditions were almost perfect, scoring was surprisingly high, the competition was reduction only, with the CSS at the conclusion of the competition being 72 (+3 reduction only).

The Carrick Trophy, for the best individual net score of the day, was won by Declan Chalmers (Ballochmyle), his net 67 off his 17 handicap being three shots better than anyone else in the field.

Other nett prizewinners were Fraser Chape (Royal Troon) in the 10 - 24 handicap section, with 91 - 17 = 74, and Andrew Todd (Skelmorlie) in the 0 - 9 handicap section, with 77 - 7 = 70.

Declan Chalmers' score contributed to the Ballochmyle net team total of 214 which saw them take the Andrew D Nimmo Trophy back to their club for the third year in a row, their score being a full eight shots ahead of their nearest challengers.

Two handicapper Hamish Mills (Largs) returned the best scratch score of the day to take the Prestwick Circuits Trophy with a six over par 74, edging out Jack Thomas (Irvine) by virtue of the better inward half.

Led by Mills, Largs posted the early scratch team target of 240 which was ultimately only bettered by two other team in the field.

Troon Welbeck took runners up spot in the scratch event, their team total of 238 falling six shots short of the best return of the day from the Irvine team.

Jack Thomas' 74 was combined with a 78 from boys internationalist Stuart Easton and an 80 from Ross McDonald to give a team total of 232, and give the Irvine team the title for the very first time in the 27 year history of the competition.

At the conclusion of play, prizes and trophies were presented by Ayrshire Golf Association President Milton Murray.
