Colin Brown, who was Captain of Prestwick Golf Club in 2001, the year the club celebrated its 150th anniversary, 'drove in' as captain of The Royal And Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in the traditional ceremony at 8.00 a.m. on a breezy but bright autumn morning on Thursday 24th September.
Watched by a group of R & A Past Captains, including fellow Prestwick member Richard Cole-Hamilton and a large crowd of R & A members, augmented by groups of supporters from both Prestwick and Kilmacolm, where Colin was Centenary Captain, the new captain had his golf ball teed up by R & A Honorary Professional Jim Farmer.
To the sound of the traditional cannon, Colin struck his tee shot towards the assembled group of caddies in the distance, although the caddies found that for once the chase for the Captains golf ball was not a flat race but something of a steeplechase as his drive drifted over the fence on the right of the fairway, leading to a scramble over the obstacle for the caddies in their bid to be first to lay hands on the ball.
As Colin waited on the tee the succesful caddie ( pictured below)returned the ball to the new captain of the club and received a gold soverign in exchange.
Something of a 'anniversary specialist' Colin's captaincy of the R & A coincides with the 150th anniversary of the fist Open Championship which was played at Prestwick on 17th October 1860.
Many congratulations go to Colin from golfers throughout Ayrshire, with best wishes for an enjoyable year in office.
