AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE- Champions hopes hang by a thread, whilst West Kilbride and Ballochmyle finish on top of their sections
Three of the 4 League Championship qualifying sections have been decided, with West KIlbride, Ballochmyle and either Ravenspark or Ardeer going into the last four.
In Section A, The season ended in farce, with Routenburn conceding 4 of their 8 section matches in total, including an early match at Ballochmyle and the return on Sunday at Routenburn, for which Ballochmyle turned up as arranged, to find an open competition taking place and no Routenburn team to play. St. Cuthbert completed their programme of matches with a 4-2 win at New Cumnock on Saturday to keep their qualifuication hopes alive, but the inability of Routenburn to fulfill thier fixtures, and the resultant match award to Ballochmyle saw the latter club through to the semi finals by virtue of tie difference over all matches, Ballochmyle and St. Cuthbert being tied on points at the top of the table. Final positions in the section are :-
TEAM P/W/D/L/F/A/Dif/Pts
BALLOCHMYLE 8/5/2/1/32.5/15.5/+17/24

In Section B, West Kilbride claimed the semi final place by virtue of a 4.5-1.5 win at St. Meddans. This, coupled with a 3-3 draw at largs and a defeat by 4-2 for largs at Beith, halted Largs' hopes for the 2005 Championship. Present positions are :-

WEST KILBRIDE 8/6/1/1/30/18/+12/26

In Section D, A similar problem to that in Section A has arisen, with Skelmorlie conceding matches away to Ardeer and at home to Ravenspark. Consequently, with only the two matches between Caprington & Skelmorlie remaining to be played, the present positions are:-
TEAM/P/W/D/L/F/A/Dif/Pts

WEST OF SCOTLAND BOYS LEAGUE - Ayrshire gain away win over Renfrewshire
The Ayrshire boys team beat Renfrewshire 4.5 - 3.5 at Erskine on Sunday (24 July) in the latest match in the West Of Scotland inter county league for the Wishart Trophy.
Despite the absence of a number of players, due to the Scottish Amateur Championship commencing on Monday at Southerness, Ayrshire put up an excellent performance to gain a notable win.
Kyle Smith (Barassie), winner of the Under 16 trophy in last weeks Scottish Boys Strokeplay Championship, had an epic tussle with Michael dailly of the host club. A putt which lipped out on the 17th hole saw Smith surrender his lead, but he showed his mettle on the final green, holing a difficult downhill 7 foot putt for a one hole victory.
In the lead match, Fraser Lawrie (Largs) and Colin Thomson (East Renfrewshire) traded holes throughout, and secured a deserved half match on the final green.
Renfrewshire secured an early lead by taking the second game, but wins in games 3 through to 6 was sufficient to secure the match for Ayrshire, despite defeats in the final two games.
Full match results (Ayrshire names first):-
Fraser Lawrie (Largs) halved with Colin Thomson (East Ren.)
Andrew Abercrombie (Largs) lost to Jack Bradley (Paisley) 5&3
Euan Brown (Barassie) beat Jonathon Caldwell (Greenock) 4&3
Kyle Smith (Barassie) beat Michael Dailly (Erskine) 1 hole
Iain Menzies (Largs) beat Stephen McNamara (Renfrew) 3&2
John Shanks (Ardeer) beat Scott Mcgonnigle (Cochrane castle) 2&1
Andrew Connell (Largs) lost to Ricardo Ribeccio (Greenock) 2&1
Jamie Mackay (Barassie) lost to Peter Mclachlan (Eastwood) 7&5

AYRSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Menzies returns to defend title.
Iain Menzies (Largs) bids to defend the Ayrshire Boys Golf Championship trophy at Prestwick St. Nicholas on Thursday 4th August, when he heads a strong field in the 54th playing of the championship. Despite the absence of the new Scottish Boys Strokeplay Champion Steven McEwan (Kilmarnock Barassie), on international business, there are a number of very low handicapped players who will challenge for the title.
The championship is played over 36 holes strokeplay, and in addition the players returning the best 8 aggregate scratch scores will progress to contest the Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Championship over the Prestwick Golf Club links from 11th to 13th August.
The draw for the Championship at St Nicholas on 4th August is undernoted.
Morning tee times are given, with the afternoon times scheduled to be 5 hours after the corresponding morning time.

SCOTTISH BOYS STROKEPLAY - McEwan takes national title
In what proved to be an excellent championship for the Ayrshire representation, Steven McEwan of Kilmarnock Barassie produced two excellent closing rounds on Thursday at Monifieth to take the 2005 Scottish Boys Open Strokeplay Championship.
A morning round of 67 was followed in the afternoon by a 69, which included birdies at the final two holes, to give McEwan a one under par total of 283 over the four rounds, and the title by two strokes, from defending champion Scott Henry (Cardross).
The leader after 3 rounds, Stuart Robin (Prestwick St. Nicholas) faultered over the inward nine of the final round, eventually posting a 75 for a 287 total and a very creditable 4th place overall.
Former Scottish Under 16 Champion, David Addison (Kilmarnock Brassie) also finished well, 72 in both his Thursday rounds giving him a 290 total, and equal 6th place.
Kyle Smith (Kilmarnock Barassie) completed an outstanding championship for Ayrshire, and the Kilmarnock Barassie club, with rounds of 69 and 74 on Thursday to win the George McDonald Memorial Bowl for the best score by a player under 16, his 295 giving him an equal 10th spot in the championship overall and the under 16 award by an impressive 6 shots from his nearest rival.
