With a 38 over par team total of 758 in the two strokeplay
qualifying rounds, the Scotland team secured the eight, and final, place in the
top flight for the matchplay stages, five shots clear of their closest
challengers and twenty five shots behind the leading qualifiers from Denmark.
With five from six scores counting towards the team score in
each of the qualifying rounds, Paul Moultrie’s scores of 78 and 76 contributed
to the Scotland total in each round.
In the first round of the matchplay stages, the quarter
finals, Scotland faced the top seeds, Denmark, and recorded a notable 4 – 1 victory
to progress to the semi finals.
Paul Moultrie joined with Kenny Gallagher in the one
foursomes tie, and secured a point for the team with a 2 & 1 victory over
Rene Michelsen and Michael Flindt.
In the semi finals against England, Moultrie and Gallagher
were paired again, but lost out narrowly to Ian Attoe & Andrew Smith at the
20th hole of their foursomes tie, as Scotland lost out to England 3 –
2 in their bid for a place in the final.
England’s title hopes were dashed in the final when they
lost 3 – 2 to Sweden.
In the third and fourth place play off, Scotland were up
against Ireland and Moultrie & Gallacher again played the foursomes tie,
losing out by 5 & 4 to Jody Fanagan & Eamon Haugh as Scotland were
beaten 4 – 1 in the match.
