Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) led the Scottish challenge in the opening round of the World Junior Golf Team Championships, which got underway in Japan today, returning a superb 4 under par 67 to tie for 2nd place on the individual leaderboard.
Stewart had 3 birdies on the outward 9, at the 2nd, 7th and 9th, along with a couple of bogeys to turn at one under par. Further birdies at the 13th, 14th and 16th over the last 9 holes with no bogeys took him to 4 under for the round.
The Scots are currently tied for 8th place in the team event, with a total of 212 (1 under), and are 5 shots adrift of the hosts, Japan, in third place.
Sweden lead with defending champions Norway in second place.
Sweden’s Jesper Kennergard is leading the individual competition with a 6 under 65.
