THE STARTING FIELD OF 78, WHICH INCUDED HEATHER MACRAE (DUNBLANE), LAST WEEK’S WINNER OF THE WELSH WOMEN’S OPEN AMATEUR STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT NEWPORT AND KRYSTLE CAITHNESS (ST REGULUS), JUST HOME FROM AN IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE IN THE FIVE NATIONS COMMONWEALTH TOURNAMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA WHICH WAS WON BY THE GB & I TEAM, WAS CUT TO 32 AFTER TWO ROUNDS OF STROKE PLAY ON TUESDAY 15TH AND WEDNESDAY 16TH.
THE FINAL WILL BE PLAYED AT 9.00AM ON SATURDAY 19 MAY.
THE FIRST SCOTTISH LADIES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP WAS HELD AT ST ANDREWS IN 1903. ALEXA GLOVER OF ELIE WON, BEATING MOLLY GRAHAM IN THE FINAL. THE COMPETITORS AT THAT MEETING DECIDED THAT THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION SHOULD BE FORMED TO RUN FUTURE CHAMPIONSHIPS, WHICH HAVE CONTINUED ANNUALLY APART FROM BREAKS FOR THE WAR YEARS.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP HAS BEEN PLAYED AT BARASSIE ONCE BEFORE IN 1985 WHEN LOCAL PLAYER ALISON GEMMILL BEAT DONNA THOMSON FROM PENRITH 2 & 1 IN THE FINAL.
IN THE FIRST ROUND OF MATCH PLAY, THE DEFENDING CHAMPION FACES HEATHER ANDERSON (DOWNFIELD)
THREE AYRSHIRE PLAYERS QUALIFIED IN THE TOP 32, WITH HOST CLUB PLAYER LESLEY WILLIAMSON JUST MISSING OUT IN A THREE WAY PLAY OFF FOR THE LAST TWO PLACES.
IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE MATCHPLAY, RACHAEL McQUEEN (BENTINCK LADIES) FACES ONE OF THE FAVOURITES, KRYSTLE CAITHNESS, AUDREY THOMSON (LOUDOUN) TAKES ON FORMER CHAMPION ELAINE MOFFAT (ST. REGULUS) AND ROS PURDOM (PRESTWICK ST. NICHOLAS) FACES ALEXANDRA BUSHBY (STRATHMORE).
AYRSHIRE ALSO HAS THREE PLAYERS IN THE COMPETITION FOR THE CLARK ROSEBOWL, PLAYED FOR BY THE PLAYERS RETURNING THE BEST 16 SCORES, OUTWITH THE 32 CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIESRS.
