SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - McEwan is lone Ayrshire player in quarter finals

Steven McEwan (Caprington) is the only Ayrshire player left at the quarter final stage of the 2008 Scottish Amateur Championship being held at Carnoustie this week.

Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle) made his exit in round 4, losing by 3 & 2 to Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh).

The other two Ayrshire players left both won their fourth round ties, Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) beating Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord ) by 3 & 2 and Steven McEwan (Caprington) beating Philip Mclean (Peterhead ) by 2 holes, and so the pair were destined to meet in an all Ayrshire fifth round match which McEwan won by 3 & 2.

In the friday morning quarter finals, Steven McEwan faces Scott Borrowman (Dollar), with an 0830 tee off.

SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Harkins ousts Booth to snatch fourth round spot

Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle) caused one of the shock results of the championship at Carnoustie on Thursday morning beating second seed and Scottish Strokeplay Champion Wallace Booth (Comrie) by 2 & 1 in their third round tie.

Harkins now faces Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) in the fourth round.

In the other third round tie involving an Ayrshire player completed on Thursday morning, Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) lost to Scott Borrowman (Dollar) by 1 hole.

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) and Steven McEwan (Caprington), along with Chris Harkins, maintain the Ayrshire interest in the championship as the fourth round progresses today.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - 4 Ayrshire players remain for Thursday

The Ayrshire challenge for the 2008 Scottish Amateur Championship, being held at Carnoustie this week, is in the hands of Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), Steven McEwan (Caprington), Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle) after the other Ayrshire challengers made their exit on Wednesday.


Of the remaining first round ties, Cameron Gray (West Kilbride) lost to Ross Kellett (Colville Park) by 3 & 1 whilst Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) negotiated the first round with a 3 & 2 win over Ross McGuire (Dalmahoy) before losing by the same margin in the second round, on Wednesday afternoon, to Gordon Yates (Hilton Park).

Chris Harkins (Ayr Belleisle) had a 2 & 1 first round win over Malcolm Davidson (Craigie Hill) before recording a 4 & 3 win in round 2 against Aaron Howard (Murrayshall)

The last remaining first round tie involving an Ayrshire player saw Ross Dixon (Kilmarnock Barassie) lose by 5 & 3 to Neil McBride (Cowglen).

George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark) played his second round match on Wednesday, against the 4th seed Gavin dear (Murrayshall) and left the championship after a 2 & 1 defeat. Also out went Robertson's clubmate John Cairney (Irvine Ravenspark) who lost by 4 & 3 to Philip Mclean (Peterhead).

Despite his extra time win in round 1, Ewan McKinnon (Corrie) lost out in the second round, being beaten 2 holes by Donald Ballantyne (Selkirk).

Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) was the victor in the all Ayrshire second round tie, beating John Shanks (Irvine) by one hole, to set up a tie against Scott Borrowman (Dollar) in the next round.

Steven McEwan (Caprington) followed his first round 6 & 5 win by defeating the newly crowned Boys Strokeplay Champion Mark Bookless (Sandyhills) by a similar margin. McEwan then went on to beat Donald Ballantyne (Selkirk) by 5 & 4 to reach round four.

Also through to the fourth round is sixth seed Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) who followed a morning 3 & 2 win over John Goodward (McDonald) with a 5 & 4 win over Andrew Wallace (Glenbervie).

With the championship still playing 'catch up' after weather delays earlier in the week and play suspecded due to bad light at 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday, the remaining third round matches will hopefully be completed tomorrow, as well as the fourth round ties.

Jamie Mackay's game with Scott Borrowman is still to be completed, with the winner facing either Michael main (Thornton) or Steven Buchan (Royal Aberdeen).

Chris Harkins' game against Wallace Booth (Comrie) is also to be completed, with the winner facing either Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) or Stuart McKendrick (Dunkeld & Birnam) in round 4.

Michael Stewart is due to tee off at 0934 in his fourth round match whilst Steven McEwan plays off at 0942 on Thursday.

GLENMUIR PGA EVENT - McKinnon's challenge faulters in Leeds

The challenge of Jim McKinnon (Irvine) in the Glenmuir PGA championship, being played at Moortown in Leeds this week, faultered in the second round when he could onlty manage a four over par 75 for a 144 total.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - 5 from 6 Ayrshire players through as fog stops play

The second day of the 2008 Scottish Amateur Championship at Carnoustie was cut short at 6.45 p.m. due to fog which had hampered the championship all day.

Of the first round matches which were completed as scheduled on Tuesday, 5 of the 6 Ayrshire players involved progressed to round 2.

John Cairney (Irvine Ravenspark) won by 2 & 1 against John Duff (Newmachar) and now plays Philip McLean (Peterhead) in round 2.

Ewan McKinnon (Corrie) edged out Mike MacDonald (Fortrose & Rosemarkie) at the second extra hole, to book a second round tie against Donald Ballantyne (Selkirk).

Former Scottish Boys Strokeplay Champion Steven McEwan (Caprington) had a 6 & 5 win against Ralph Wardlaw (Carnoustie Caledonia) and now faceds the newly crowned Boys Strokeplay Champion, Mark Bookless (Sandyhills) in the second round.

Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) - pictured right - was a 4 & 3 winner against Allan McKie (Glencruitten) and now faces fellow Ayrshireman John Shanks (Irivne) - pictured below - in round 2 after Shanks beat Stan Morrison (USA) by 4 & 2.

The sole Ayrshire casualty of the completed matches on Tuesday was Euan Brown (Kilmarnock Barassie) who lost by one hole to Frank McCarron (Stonehaven).

Play resumes at 0645 on Wednesday, when the remaining first round and outstanding scheduled second round matches will hopefully be completed.

GLENMUIR PGA EVENT - Jim McKinnon starts well in Leeds

Jim McKinnon (Irvine) got off to a good start in the Glenmuir PGA professional championship at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds, on Tuesday 29/07/2008 as the championship was delayed due to torrential rain.

McKinnon opened with a two-under 69 which leaves him in joint second place amongs the players who managed to complete their first round.

Former European Tour player Andrew Sherborne, and Will Barnes from the Lichfield are joint leaders on 68.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Robertson and Stewart through as three Ayrshire players exit championship

George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark) and Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) safely negotiated their respective first round ties in the 2008 Scottish Amateur Championship at Carnoustie on Monday 28th July, whilst three other Ayrshire players exited the championship at the first hurdle.

John Sloan (Doon Valley) lost out by 3 & 1 against Ian Thomson (Powfoot), whilst David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie) was beaten 2 & 1 by 8th seed Scott Henry (Cardross).

The other defeated Ayrshire player was Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) who was beaten 5 & 4 by defending champion John Gallagher (Swanston New).

Better news came from George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark) who won by two holes against John McMahon (Cardross). Robertson now faces the 4th seed, Gavin Dear (Murrayshall) in the second round on Tuesday.

6th seed Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) ws a 3 & 2 winner against Gordon Miller (Cawder) and now plays John Godward (McDonald) in the second round.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE - Opening shock for holders of Wallace Thornton Trophy title.

Both sections in the 2008 Wallace Thornton Trophy (scratch knockout) are under way, with the opening fixture in section one providing a surprise when Prestwick St. Cuthbert won by 3 - 1 against the trophy holders, at the Barassie course.

In the other fixture played in the section so far, Kilbirnie had a 3.5 - 0.5 home win over Largs.

In Section 2, Belleisle opened with a 3 - 1 win at Ravenspark, whilst West Kilbride are setting the pace with two 3 - 1 home wins against Ravenspark and Ballochmyle.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP - 3 of four League Championship semi finalists now known

Three of the semi finalists in the 2008 Ayrshire Junior Golf League Championship have been identified with only a few matches remaining to be played throughout the four sections.



In Section A, all New Cumnock results were discarded after the East Ayrshire side defaulted on two matches during the campaign.

A recent 5.5 - 0.5 home win over Kilbirnie secured West Kilbride the top spot and a place in the last four, by virtue of points difference.

In Section B, Prestwick St. Nicholas hold pole position after recent home wins by 5.5 - 0.5 and 6 - 0 over Largs Routenburn and Ayr Belleisle respectively, and despite a 4.5 - 1.5 defeat at the hands of Largs the Prestwick side have a clear lead with only one match remaining to be played.

In other recent matches, Belleisle and Routenburn had 5 - 1 home wins against Ravenspark and Ayr Belleisle respectively, whilst Ravenspark and Belleisle fought out a 3 - 3 draw.

Ballochmyle are the first team into the semi finals of the 2008 Ayrshire Junior Golf League Under 16 Knockout Trophy competition after a 2.5 - 1.5 home win over Kilbirnie Place in the quarter final.

In the final, Ballochmyle face a home match against Ardeer or Ayr Belleisle to decide who will contest the final.

AYRSHIRE JUNIOR CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - Thorburn through to semi finals

Sean Thornton (Ayr Belleisle) is the first player into the semi finals of the 2008 Ayrshire Junior Champion Of Champions, after a 3 & 2 win away from hme against Andrew Wright (Kilmarnock Barassie).

Thornton now faces a home tie against Gary Patterson (Ballochmyle) or Andrew Abercrombie (Largs) for a place in the final.

SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Vaughan wins title as Drummond finishes top Scot

Ross Drummond from Prestwick finished with the distinction of being top Scot at the 2008 Senior Open Championship, played at Royal Troon this week

American Bruce Vaughan beat fellow contryman John Cook in a play off for the title with a 6 under par total of 284, whilst Drummond shot a final round of 76 for a 299 total.

AYRSHIRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY - Semi Final line up completed

The line up for the two semi finals of the 2008 Ayrshire Champion Of Champions Trophy competition, due to be played at Royal Troon on Friday 1st August, have been decided.

In the quarter finals, 2006 winner Brian Moore (Largs) beat Fraser Lawrie (West Kilbride) by 7 & 6 and now faces a semi final clash with Alex Gourlay (Irvine) who defeated Nick Tindall (Tam O Shanter) by 3 & 2 in the last eight.

The other semi final features Paul Moultrie (Troon Portland) and George Robertson (Irvine Ravenspark) who reached the last four by defeating clubmate and trophy holder John Cairney.

The first of the semi finals are due to tee off at 5.00 p.m., and spectators are welcome to attend.

The final of the competition is scheduled to take place at Royal Troon the following Friday, 8th August, again with a 5.00 p.m. tee off.

AYRSHIRE SUMMER LEAGUE - Troon Welbeck grab last semi final place

The semi final line up for the 2008 Ayrshire Summer league has been completed, with League 1 being won by Troon Welbeck after a deciding 4.5 - 1.5 home win over Ayr belleisle in their final match.

Troon Welbeck now face a semi final clash with League 2 winners Kilmarnock (Barassie), with Welbeck due to be at home in the first leg.

The other semi final features the winners of Leagues 3 & 4, Irvine Ravenspark and Caprington respectively. Ravenspark, the 2007 finalists, are due to be at home in the first leg.

All semi final matches are due for completion by the end of August.

THE SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Drummond remains top sScot after round 2

Ross Drummond from Prestwick retained the distinction of being top Scot after the second round of the 2008 Senior Open Championship, being played at Royal Troon this week.

Drummond shot a second round 76, five over par on the day, for a championship total of 148, six over par. Drummond finished his second round in style, playing a superb approach which came to rest about a foot from the hole to set up a closing birdie.

Bruce Vaughan (USA) leads the championship on 139, three under par.

The cut after round 2 fell at 152, 10 over par, which saw the exit of the other two players who provided a local interest, Sam Torrance who shot a second round of 81 for 154 and Bill Lockie who had 86 on day two, for a 165 total.

Drummond tees of at 1112 hrs on saturday, alongside former Ryder Cup Captain mark James (England).

THE 2008 AYRSHIRE BOYS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP - Draw for order of play

The draw for the 2008 Ayrshire Boys Golf Championship, to be held at Ayr Belleisle on Thursday 7th August, has been announced.

46 of the best young golfers in the county will contest the title, over 36 holes strokeplay.

SCOTTISH BOYS STROKEPLAY - Stewart third as Bookless wins title

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) narrowly failed in his bid to add the national boys strokeplay title to the matchplay event he won earlier in the year, when he finished third , behind winner mark Bookless (Sandyhills)and Sam Binning (Ranfurly castle) at the Lansdowne cours at Blairgowrie on Thursday 24th July.

Stewart trailed by 6 after the second round but a third round of 70 took him to within a shot of Bookless, who had led the tournament from day one. Stewart never got any closer however, and a closing 74, his worst round of the week, put Stewart into third place on 287, five behind Bookless and 4 behind Binning.

Next best Ayrshire player was Kle Smith (Kilmarnock Barassie) who finished with a 77 for a 296 total.

SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Drummond shares leading Scot distinction after round 1

Ross Drummond from Prestwick shares the diStinction of being top Scot after the first round of the 2008 Senior Open Championship being played at Royal Troon this week, after shooting a one over par 72 on Thursday.

Scottish amateur John Fraser also returned a 72 to match Drummond's score, with both players lying 4 shots behind the leaders.

Of the other players providing the local interst, Sam Torrance finished one behind Ross Drummond on 74 whilst Bill Lockie scored 79.

SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Local interest tee times

The three players who provide the local interest at the 2008 Seniors Open Championship, being played at Royal Troon from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th July, have interesting pairings for the first round of the championship on Thursday.

Prestwick resident Ross Drummond tees of at 0840 alongside two of the most famous players in the game. Drummond's playing partners on Thursday will be Japanese legend Isao Aoki, of the unorthodox putting stance, and the even more legendary South African winner of all four 'Majors', Gary Player.

Sam Torrance, who grew up in Largs, tees off at 1350 alongside former US Open Champion Tom Kite and well known Argentinian Eduardo Romero.

At 1430, Bill Lockie (North Gailes) begins his championship bid alongside Irish amateur Adrian Morrow and South African Bobby Lincoln.

Other matches which should attract Large crowd include the 0920 trio of Tom Watson, Sandy Lyle and Greg Norman as well as the 1340 trio of 'Major' winners Mark O'Meara, Ian Woosnam and Bernard Langer.

CALLAWAY/AUDI PGA TOURNAMENT - Lomas fourth in Lanark event

Ayr based professional Jonathan Lomas took fourth spot in the Callaway / Audi PGA event at Lanark on Wednesday, with a one under par second round score of 69 for a 6 under par total of 134. His total left Lomas trailing the winner David Orr (East Renfrewshire) by 5 shots.

A one over par 73 left Stewart on 143, whilst Bookless shot a second round score of 70 for his 137 two round total

CALLAWAY/AUDI PGA TOURNAMENT - Lomas continues good form at Lanark

Ayr resident Jonathan Lomas continued the good form that saw him play in all four rounds of the Open Championship last week, when he teed up in the Callaway/Audi SPGA Order Of merit tournament at Lanark on Tuesday 22nd July.

Former Walker Cup player Lindsay Mann led the way after the first round on six under par 64, with Lomas just one shot behind overnight after shooting 65.

Jim McKinnon (Irvine) is also well placed after an opening round of 72, two over par.

Former West Kilbride club champion Graeme Fox (East Kilbride) is two better than McKinnon overning, on 70.

Former Ayrshire Golf Association President Ronnie Potts (Irvine Ravenspark) - pictured receiving the trophy from Sandy Provan - won the innaugural Ayrshire Seniors Competition for the Sandy Provan Trophy, played at Kilmarnock (Barassie) on Tuesday 22nd July.

Potts, the present manager of the Ayrshire County Team returned a net 71 off his 9 handicap to take the trophy by one shot.

Best scratch score of the day of 77 was posted by David Bruce, also of Irvine Ravenspark.

Scotland have won the girls’ home internationals for the past two years

THE SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Lockie carries Ayrshire flag on in final qualifying.

Bill Lockie (North Gailes) along with Ross Drummond and Sam Torrance will provide the local interest in the Senior Open Championship at Royal Troon from 24 to 27 July, after Lockie came through the final qualifying event at Dundonald Links on Monday 21st July.

Whilst Drummond and Torrance were exempt from the traumas of the qualifying events, Lockie, who won the Seniors PGA Championship earlier in the year, was 7th qualifier of 15 at Dundonald, returning 75 to be one shot behind the leading qualifying score of 74.

The qualifying axe at Dundonald fell at 78, with one from four qualifying. Ayrshire amateurs Allan Thomson (82) from Ayr Belleisle, Bert Ferguson (83) from Royal Troon and Ronnie McLellan from Turnberry (86) all failed in their efforts to qualify.

At Glasgow Gailes, the qualifying score was 77 with 4 from 12 on that mark making it into the championship. Turnberry amateur John Broadfoot was the only local interest at Glasgow Gailes but failed in his efforts with a score of 86.

Three local amateurs were bidding for a qualifying place at Western Gailes where the cut fell at 76, two from three on that score making it through. David Miller from Kilmarnock Barassie just failed in his quest, with a 78, as did his clubmate Robbie Fulker (80) and Prestwick St. Nicholas member John Ashton (86).

WEST OF SCOTLAND INTER COUNTY BOYS LEAGUE - Ayrshire lying third with two matches to play

Ayrshire are Lying in third place at present in the West Of Scotland Inter County Boys League with three matches played and two remaining.

CHIBERTA GRAND PRIX - McKnight second equal in Biarritz event

Robert McKnight (Caprington) shared a distant second place in the Chiberta Grand Prix at Biarritz in Southwest France recently.

McKnight and Jason Palmer (England) posted a total of 269 but were both 9 strokes adrift of the winner, Guillaume Cambis (France) who stormed to victory with rounds of 63, 65, 65 and 67 for 260

GLENCRUITTEN GOLF CLUB PRO AM - eagle lands Fox in first place

Former West Kilbride Club Champion and boys internationalist Graham Fox, who now plays professionally at East Kilbride, won the top prize in the Glencruitten Golf Club 36-hole pro-am on Saturday 19th July in a fine performance which included a hole in one at a par-4 hole.

Fox achieved his albatross 1 at the 280yd fourth hole which helped him on his way to victory with rounds of 61 and 60 for a one-under-par total of 121.

Runner-up, a stroke further back, was former Walker Cup player Lindsay Mann (Carnoustie) with scores of 62 and 60.

SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - 15 Ayrshire Players bid for national title

15 players from Ayrshire are among the field of 256 who will contest the 2008 Scottish Amateur Championship at carnoustie from 28th July to 2nd August.


The Ayrshire challenge is headed by Boys Champion and senior internationalist Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) who is seeded number 6 for the event.

There are a number of intriguing ties, none more so that the one involving David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie) and 8th seed Scott Henry (Cardross) whom Addison edged out into second place when winnign the Cameron Corbett Vase earlier this season.

Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) faces the task of ending the hopes of the defending champion John Gallagher (Swanston New) in the first round.

NORTH OF SCOTLANS SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP - McLellan third for second week

Ronnie McLellan (Turnberry) - pictured right - was third for a second successive tournament on the Scottish Seniors Circuit this week, when he followed his performance at Dumfries & County a week ago with an equally impressive finish over the Nairn Dumbar course this week.

An eagle 3 at the 16th helped Colin Christy from Kilmacolm with the even, after McLellan had led the field of 94 overnight.

David Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) & Keith GHowie (West Kilbride) also finished well up the field on 152, both having scored successive 76's over the two rounds.

SCOTTSIH BOYS OPEN STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP - Stewart Leads Ayrshire challenge

Scottish Boys Champion Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) is one of eight Ayrshire players who will tee off in the 2008 Scottish Boys Open Strokeplay Championship at Blairgowrie (Lansdowne) from 22nd to 24th July.

Stewart will be bidding to capture a second national title of the season, in the event in which he lost in a play off for the title 12 months ago.

Fellow boys internationalist Kyle Smith (Kilmarnock Barassie) is also in the field, as well as current Ayrshire Junior Order Of Merit leader Scott Brown (Turnberry).

SOUTH AYRSHIRE JUNIOR GOLF PRE HANDICAP TOURNAMENT - closing date for entries approaching

Entries for the 2008 Junior Golf Pre-handicap Open, to be held at Troon Fullarton Golf Course on Monday 4th August, close on Monday 21st July.

The succesful South Ayrshire Junior Golf Pre-handicap Open was introduced a few years ago and is open to all boys and girls aged 8 years and over and under the age of 18 who have not yet achieved an official golf handicap.

The competition is played from specially installed forward junior tees on Troon Fullarton Golf Course with boys and girls playing from the same tees.

The emphasis of this competition is participation and as such a goody bag will be given to each competitor rather than having a prize list and only rewarding those who score well.

The Pre handicap Junior open will be held on the day before the Tom Lehman Trophy competition, which takes place on Tuesday 5th August.

The Tom Lehman Trophy competition is thought to be the largest single day Junior open competition in the country, if not the world, and will be played, in various categories, over the Lochgreen, Darley and Fullarton courses.

WEST OF SCOTLAND UNDER 18 INTER COUNTY LEAGUE - Second win of the year for Ayrshire as they defeat Dumbarton

Ayrshire’s Under 18 Team built on their recent fine win against Lanarkshire by defeating Dunbartonshire 5 – 3 in Sunday’s match at Prestwick St Cuthbert.

The match was a rollercoaster affair with Ayrshire building up a strong early position in the match before Dunbartonshire turned the tables, leaving the home team to mount a late fighback to earn an important victory.

In the opening matches, Marc Smith and David Wilson were both unable to hold onto early leads and slid to disappointing 3 &2 defeats. Fraser Kerr shrugged aside a couple of recent defeats to record a fine 2 hole victory with Jack McDonald continuing his recent good form with an excellent 3&2 win over Gary Meechan.

Scott Brown produced a blistering start by winning the first five holes in his 5&4 win before Andrew Wright tasted defeat in his encounter with Fraser McKenna. With Dunbartonshire beginning to look favourites, Colin Robinson and Adam Foley showed great character under pressure to produce crucial victories against Tom Sharkey and John Henry respectively.

AYRSHIRE SUMMER LEAGUE - 3 semi finalists decided as Ballochmyle drop out of championship

At the same time as three of the four semi final places were decided, Ballochmyle dropped out of League 3 after defaulting on two matches in the qualifying competition.

In League 1, recent match results include a 5 - 1 away win at Moorpark by Troon Welbeck and a win at home by Belleisle against Annanhill by the same margin.

EUROPEAN BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP - Scotland finish in 11th place

Scotland, with Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) and Kyle Smith (Kilmarnock Barassie) in the team finished in a dissapointing 11th place in teh rain shortened European Boys Team Championships, held at Bled, in Slovenia last week.

With the first days strokeplay qualifying round abandoned duue to the weather, Scotland failed to make the top flight for the matchplay stages and some indifferent results in the matchplay left Scotland in mid table after the conclusion of the championship.

SCOTTISH SENIORS TOUR - Mclellan joint third in South Of Scotland Open

Ronnie McLellan (Turnberry) was joint third in the South of Scotland Seniors Open, played at Dumfries & County on Thursday 10th and Friday 11 July.

The event was won by host club member and former internationalist Ian Brotherston with a one over par total of 139, whilst Mclellan shared third place with two others on 142.

David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) finished in a creditable fourth place in the Scottish Boys Under 14 Open Strokeplay Championship, held at The Glen in North Berwick on 11th July.

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Lomas in final qualifying success

Jonathon Lomas (Unattached), the European Tour player who resides in Ayr, will take his place in the field for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale from the 17th to 20th July after securing one of only four places available to the field of 96 players at the final qualifying event at the West Lancashire Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Lomas tied for third place with three other players, on 3 over par, and was one of the two who subsequently won the right to a place in the Open Championship next week.

AYRSHIRE GOLF ASSOCIATION - Irvine are 2008 Club Champions

On a breezy day that made conditions tricky, the team from the host club secured the Ayrshire Club Champions title, for the second time in three years, when 13 club sides contested the championship over the Irvine (Bogside) course on Sunday 6th July.

With two scores from three counting, the early leaders were The Prestwick St. Cuthbert team of Graeme Gimson (76), Kevin Fergusson (78) and Stephen McBlain (72), who held the lead until the latter stages of the event when the host club side of Alex Gourlay (72), John Shanks (71) and Henry Thomson (79) overtook the St. Cuthbert total to take the title.

The Irvine team now travel to represent Ayrshire at the Scottish final at Windyhill on 28th September 2008.

Former Scottish Boys Under 16 Strokeplay winner David Addison (Kilmarnock Barassie) - pictured right - led from the halfway stage of the 2008 cameron Corbett Vase competition at Haggs castle this weekend, 5th & 6th July, to take the his first major 72 hole strokeplay title and SGU Order Of merit event by three shots.

Addison returned scores of 69, 71, 68 & 69 for an 11-under-par total of 277.

Scott Hendry (Cardross) was his closest challenger, with two closing rounds of 68 for a 280 total.

Three players tied for third place on 282, with Steven McEwan (Caprington) in 6th place on 285.

In LEAGUE 1, Welbeck and Annanhill hold a slender lead over their challengers.
In recent fixtures, Belleisle drew 3 - 3 with Welbeck at home and had a 4 - 2 home win over Moorpark, also at Belleisle.

Welbeck maintained a share of the lead with a 4.5 - 1.5 home win over Annanhill, who had travelled to Moorpark in their ptrevious match and recorded a 6 - 0 win.
