Jack Broun (Ayr Belleisle) exited the Scottish Amateur
Championship at Crail on Thursday afternoon, 1st August, in the last
32 as Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) marched on into the last sixteen to carry on
Ayrshire’s hopes for success in the national championship this year.
On Thursday morning Broun was in devastating form in his
first round matchplay tie, crushing G Brown (Cathkin Braes) by 7 & 6, but
in the second round in the afternoon he went behind early against Connor Wilson
(Castle Park) and was never quite able to level his match, turning for home one
down before losing a couple of quick holes and eventually bowing out on the
back of a 4 & 2 defeat.

Michael Smyth carried on his good form from the previous
day, which saw him post a course record equalling score in the second strokeplay
qualifying round, into his first round match on Thursday morning, when he
overcame Matthew Miller (Lundin GC) by 3 & 2.
In Thursday afternoon’s second round Smyth was up against
Scotland boys internationalist Aamar Saleem (St Andrews New) and raced to a two
hole lead after two and stormed to the turn in six under par to take a three
hole lead.
Successive birdies at the opening two holes of the inward
nine from Smyth gave him a halved hole and a win to go four up, and despite a
slip at the twelfth where a bogey allowed his opponent to reduce the deficit to
three holes, he birdied the thirteenth to restore his four hole advantage
before two successive pars were good enough to close out a 4 & 3 victory,
with impressive figures of eight under par for the holes played.
In the last sixteen on Friday morning Michael Smyth tees off
at 09.30 against Marcus Rickard (Cupar GC)
