Irvine Golf Club are the 2019 Ayrshire Club Champions, winning
the title and the R.L Crawford Trophy at Prestwick St Cuthbert GC on Sunday 7th
July.
Thirteen Ayrshire Golf Association member clubs took part in
the championship, with the best two scratch scores from three being combined
for the team total.
The Troon St Meddans team of Greg Nichol (72) ted Gilligan
(73) and Del Chamberlain (78) set the early target with 145 but the Ballochmyle
team of William Fleming (72) Craig Hamilton (72) and Callum McKirdy (73), who
had all previously been in winning teams for their club in the event, edged
ahead of the St Meddans total with a score of 144.
After Darren Mallinson posted a level par 71, the other two Irvine
players Andrew Gibson and Daniel Forbes both returned three under par scores of
68 to propel their club into the lead in the championship on 136.
The next closest team to Irvine was ultimately the host club,
Prestwick St Cuthbert, with Stuart Robin (75) David Glass (79) and Scott Brown,
who recorded a four under par 67 and the best individual score of the day,
combining for a total of 142 which was matched by Kilmarnock Barassie, Bruce Caldow
(N/R), Stuart Miller (71) and Greg Vernon (71), with second place going to the
St Cuthbert team by virtue of the best third score.
The win by Irvine was their fourth in the championship,
coming eleven years after their last success in 2008.
Unfortunately, Irvine will not go forward to represent
Ayrshire in the National Club Championship competition following the decision
taken by Scottish Golf to discontinue the national event from 2019.
At the conclusion of play, Ayrshire Golf Association
President John W Watt presented vouchers to the leading teams and individual
before handing the R L Crawford trophy over to the 2019 Ayrshire Club Champions
from Irvine GC.
