AYRSHIRE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Largs win title for a second time over their home course

Largs won the R L Crawford Trophy and Ayrshire Club Champions title over their home course on Sunday 5th July, repeating their success of eleven years ago when their only previous win in the event, in 2004, was also over the Kelburn course.

The 2015 Ayrshire Club Champions from Largs GC
Iain McDonald, Gregor Dickson & David McDonald

Loudoun set the early pace with Tommy McInally (70) and John Haggarty (74) providing the two counting scores towards a team total of 144, but the host club soon overtook the total by three shots, Gregor Dickson (71) and Iain McDonald (70) providing the two counting scores whilst David McDonald (75) provided a useful back up third score in the event of a tie.

Defending champions Prestwick put up a stout defence but fell seven shots short of the leaders, and of the seventeen competing clubs, only Prestwick St Cuthbert who were one of the later starters looked like challenging the Largs total.
Steven Wallace retuned a level par 70, but Graeme Gimson and Craig Telfer both scored 74, leaving Prestwick St Cuthbert alongside Loudoun on 144, three off the pace.

The Prestwick St Cuthbert trio did have the consolation of taking the runners up spot by virtue of the best third score, the third time they have been runners up in the competition for the title, which has so far eluded the club team.

Tommy McInally (Loudoun) took the prize for the best individual scratch score of the day, winning a three way tie on 70 by virtue of the better inward half.

The CSS for the competition rose to 73 (+2)

At the conclusion of the championship, Ayrshire Golf Association President James McMurdo  presented prizes to the successful teams and players, and handed over the championship trophy and medals to the successful trio from Largs.

Largs GC will now go forward to represent Ayrshire in the Scottish Club Championship at Fortrose & Rosemarkie on Sunday 20th September.
