BELHAVEN BEST SCOTTISH CAPTAINS & SECRETARIES CHAMPIONSHIP - Rowallan castle take the honours at Bathgate qualifier

The Rowallan Castle duo of John Rushbury & Andrew Macleod took the honours on Tuesday 19th May at Bathgate GC when they came first in the SGU Belhaven Best captains & Secretaries Championship qualifying event.

For John Rushbury it proved to be his second taste of success in 48 hours in national competition, following his role as team manager for the winning Ayrshire team in the Scottish Area team Championships on Sunday 17th May at Blairgowrie.

With the top eight in each qualifying event in the better ball format going forward to the grand final at Cruden Bay in October, Rusbury & Macleod led the field at Bathgate with a five under par score of 66. 

The Ayr Seafield pairing of Jason Denham & Peter Harding finished in fifteenth place at Bathgate with a one over par 72.

Earlier this month, on Thursday 7th May, three other Ayrshire teams tasted success in the qualifying event at Williamwood GC when they qualified for the grand final alongside Rowallan Castle.

The Ardeer pair of Ken Smith & John Boyle were tied second on the day with a level par 69, four shots behind winner Bearsden.

Troon St Meddans, represented by John Nellany & Frank Drum, and Stewarton, represented by Darren Murdoch & Jim McBlain, tied in fifth place on 70 to take two of the qualifying places.

The Tam O  Shanter team of Findlay Craig & David Gemmell along with the Irvine representatives Bill McMahon & Brian Lamb, tied ninth place on 73 to just miss out on qualification.

Three other Ayrshire teams played in the qualifier at Williamwood.

Civil Aviation Authority Golf Society (CAAGS), represented by Graham Donald & James Ross, finished tied fourteenth on 74 whilst the irvine ravenspark duo of Gerry McKenna & Ian Griffin were one shot further back on 75 and the Chase representatives John Brodie & Eric Boreland finished in 24th place on 80.

Two other Ayrshire clubs have the chance of booking a place in the final when they compete in the qualifying event at lanark GC on Wednesday 19th August.

New Cumnock will be represented by Brian park & james Graham whilst Troon merchants will be represented by John Dodd & Tom McClements
