SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - Five more from nine negotiate round 1 as Moultrie books first Ayrshire spot in round 3


The first round matches in the 2013 Scottish Amateur Championship, being played this week at Blairgowrie, were completed on Tuesday with five of the nine Ayrshire players involved going through to round 2.

Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) eased through by 1 hole against David Morrison (Duff House Royal) and now plays Darren Hulston (Dollar) in the second round on Wednesday.

Ayrshire Matchplay Champion Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) also won on the final green, by two holes, against Daniel Kay (Dunbar) and now faces David Mitchell (Leven Thistle) in round 2.

The all Ayrshire clash between Charlie Macneal (Prestwick) and Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting bay) went into overtime before Macneal won through at the 21st hole to set up a second round tie with Matthew Reid (Downfield).

Another final green victor was Craig Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert), a one hole winner against Keith Paterson (Kinross). Telfer now plays Chris Lawton (Falkirk Tryst) in the second round.

In the final first round match, James Bunch (Prestwick) was a 4 & 3 victor over Jamie Pryde (Deeside) and now has a second round match against Ryan Campbell (Falkirk)

The results of Tuesday's first round matches in which Ayrshire players bowed out of the championship were :-

Scott Brown (Turnberry) lost to John Duff (Newmacher) at the 21st
Kenny Mackaskill (Turnberry Staff) lost to Colin Edgar (Renfrewshire) by 1 hole
David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) lost to Callum Hill (Muckhart) by 2 & 1.

Two Ayrshire players were involved in the early second round matches on Tuesday afternoon, with mixed fortunes.

Paul Moultrie
Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) ousted former champion and host club member Glenn Campbell, edging him out on the final green by 1 hole.

Moultrie now plays Ryan Lumsden (Royal Wimbledon) in the third round on Wednesday

Ewam McKinnon (Corrie) did not fare so well however, going down by 3 & 2 to Cameron Kirkwood (Bearsden) in their second round tie.

The remaining second and third round ties are scheduled to be completed on Wednesday.
