EUROPEAN GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP - Girls qualify for top flight but lose out in quarter finals

The Scotland Girls team, with Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) in their number, qualified for the top flight of in the rain shortened European Girls Championship at Linkopings Golf Club in Sweden this week, before losing out in the quarter finals to top qualifiers, Spain.

With the second round of strokeplay qualifying, scheduled for Wednesday, cancelled due to flooding of the course, Scotland secured the 8th place in the top flight by a single stroke. Jaffrey was the second best Scots performer in the qualifying with a 75.

In the quarter final match on Thursday against top qualifiers Spain, the Scots lost the foursomes 2 - 0 and the singles 4 - 1 to lose out by 6 - 1 overall. Jaffrey secured a half match to contribute to the Scottish side's point.

Lauren Whyte & Lesley Atkins lost to Nuria Iturrios and Ainhoa Olarra by 6 & 4
Clara Young & Heather Munro lost to Alejandra Pasarin and Harang Lee by 6 & 4


Singles
Whyte halved with Iturrios.
Atkins lost to Pasarin by 4 & 2
Connie Jaffrey halved with Clara Baena
Fiona Liddell lost to Olarra by 5 & 3
Young lost to Lee by 6 & 5

In Friday's match, in their bid to secure fifth place overall, Scotland beat F
inland by 3 to 2 to keep the goal of fifth place in their sights, which would be a creditable performance following their first qualification for the top flight since the present six player format was introduced.

Connie Jaffrey kept up her good showing in the event with a win in one of the singles matches.

On Saturday, the Scots play Italy to determine who will finish fifth and sixth, whilst France and Sweden will play off for the overall Championship.
