SOUTH AFRICAN GOLF - Michael Stewart finishes third

Report by COLIN FARQUHARSON
 courtesy of the www.scottishgolfview.com website

Scottish amateur champion Michael Stewart finished third in the Gauteng North Open amateur golf championship after leading at halfway in the 72-hole tournament at Pecanwood Golf and Country Club, north of Johannesburg.

The Troon Welbeck man, pictured, shot rounds of 69, 66, 70 and 72 for an 11-under-par total of 277. He was overtaken over the third and fourth rounds by two South Africans, Jaco Mouton and Danie Van Tonder.

Mouton scored 68, 70, 71 and 65, coming home in 31 in the last round to Stewart's 34), to win with a 14-under-par total of 274, one shot ahead of Van Tonder (70-69-70-66).

A third South African, Armandt Scholtz, took over the third-round lead from Stewart with a 68 to Stewart's 70 to lead the Scot with a 54-hole total of 204 to Stewart's 205 with 18 holes to go.

Scholtz blew up with 43 shots to the turn in his final round, finishing with a 77 for 281 and fifth place but Stewart could not hold the strong-finishing Mouton and Van Tonder at bay over the final round and his closing outward half of 38 to Mouton's 34 and Van Tonder's 33 opened the door for the South African pair to finish first and second.

Final positions apart, Stewart's 11-under-par total over a Jack Nicklaus-designed course which is rated one of the best in South Africa was a credit to the young man from Ayrshire. Same applies to Law and Findlay who were four-under-par for the 72 holes.

David Law (Hazlehead) and Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) tied for 11th place on four-under 284. Law scored 69, 70, 73 and 72, Findlay 73, 64, 73 and 74. Findlay's second round was the lowest of the tournament.

Other placings by the Scottish Golf Union squad who are in South Africa for an eight-week spell were: Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) 291 (T29), Philip McLean (Peterhead) 296 (T44), Paul Shields (Kirkhill) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) 298 (T48) and James White (Lundin) 301 (T55).

Ross Kellett (Colville Park) and Kris Nicol (Fraserburgh) missed the halfway cut, Kellett by one shot with rounds of 75 and 76 for 151, Nicol by two with 75 and 77.

DUBAI DESERT CLASSIC - Ayrshire golfer secures starting place in Tour event

Ayrshire golfer Callum Nicoll has secured a place in the starting line up for the 2011 Omega Dubai Desert Classic after winning through the qualifying event on Sunday.

Nicoll, who played his junior golf in Ayrshire as a member of Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club, was attached to the Prestwick Golf Club as an assistant professional before taking up a post in Dubai
around a year ago.

(from the European Tour website)

Khaled Attieh (amateur) and Callum Nicoll (professional) held their nerves when it mattered most to win the 2011 Omega Dubai Desert Classic qualifying round in their respective divisions at the Emirates Golf Club on Sunday.

The two qualifiers, who shot an identical one-under-par 71, will join a star-studded field spearheaded by World Number One Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods, arguably the greatest golfer of the modern era, when The European Tour event gets under way from February 10 to 13.

Attieh, who became the second Saudi golfer to win the qualifier after Othman Almulla, fired four birdies and an eagle (on the 10th) in his round which also contained a triple bogey and two bogeys while Nicoll mixed three birdies – two on the front nine – with two bogeys in a consistent round.

The Saudi ace, who is a class 10th student at Dubai American Academy, appeared on cruise control when he raced to three-under-par after recording a magnificent eagle on the 10th. But golf can be full of surprises. A disaster struck on the 12th when an erratic approach shot by Attieh went out of bound, resulting in a triple bogey.

Attieh, however, remained unruffled despite squandering a two-shot lead over Dubai Creek’s Andy Andrews, who, in the end, settled for runner-up place three shots off the pace.

The 16-year-old showed great strength of character in getting the job done in a superb fashion. He responded with a birdie on the 13th and though he bogeyed the 15th, he picked up the vital shot on the 17th when he holed in from two feet and finished a memorable round with a solid par.

“I think I played solid on the front nine and that set tone for the round,” said Attieh, who has already made a mark on the regional circuit, posting creditable second-place finishes in both Pan Arab and GCC Championships besides winning the Saudi Open last year.

Attieh, who is a member at the Arabian Ranches Golf Club, does fancy his chances of making the cut at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, but that “first shot off the first tee” will be important. “I have watched Tiger Woods playing here in Dubai and can certainly say the experience of joining him in the field would be quite scary. But I am looking forward to it.”

Scotland’s Nicoll, who teaches at the Els Club, also feels he has a realist chance of making it to the weekend. Playing only for the third time at the Majlis course, the 28-year-old from Irvine strung together a very consistent round.

“The conditions were fine and enjoyed playing on the course,” said Nicoll, who is no stranger to playing in big tournaments, having missed on The Open Championship qualifier in 2007 by two shots.

"I think I am going to enjoy playing in such a great field. If I can play to my potential, I do a see a realistic chance of making the cut,” said Nicoll, who finished three shots ahead of David Gray (DCGYC) and Richard Sheridan of Butch Harmon School of Golf.

In all 49 players, including 20 amateurs, featured in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic qualifying round, organized by ‘golf in DUBAi.’

Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi, presented the prizes and wished both the qualifiers good luck for their big challenge ahead.

Omega will be the event's title sponsor and Dubal (Dubai Aluminium), the main sponsor. Co-sponsors include: CNN, Gulf News, Emirates NBD, Jumeirah and Wasl. Event patrons are Dubai Duty Free, Carpetland and Motivate. The events are part of golf in DUBAi's drive to showcase the emirate's vibrant golfing scene to a worldwide audience.

BARCLAYS SCOTTISH OPEN - Venue change announced for Tour event

(European Tour Press Release)

The Barclays Scottish Open will have a new home with the European Tour announcing that Castle Stuart Golf Links on the Moray Firth coast will host this year’s championship to be played 7 – 10 July.

Situated between Inverness and Nairn, Castle Stuart Golf Links will be the seventh Scottish course to play host to the prestigious tournament since 1972; following in the footsteps of Downfield, St Andrews, Haggs Castle, The Gleneagles Hotel, Carnoustie and Loch Lomond Golf Club, which staged proceedings over the last 15 years from 1996 to 2010.

The prize fund for the 2011 Barclays Scottish Open remains at £3 million and to claim the first prize of £500,000, the players will have to conquer a new golf course which has received worldwide praise since its official opening in the summer of 2009.

Co-designed by Managing Partner Mark Parsinen – who was also responsible for the design of Kingsbarns in Fife – and American golf course architect Gil Hanse, the course was voted as Best New Course for 2009 by Golf Magazine USA while Ron Whitten, writing in the December 2010 issue of Golf Digest USA, stated that “Castle Stuart might be the most perfectly conceived and executed design ever built.”

Italian Edoardo Molinari will defend the title against a stellar field including Graeme McDowell, the 2008 champion, and Phil Mickelson, winners of the US Open and the Masters Tournament respectively in 2010, and three time Major Champion Padraig Harrington, who have all, at this early stage, committed to playing at Castle Stuart in July.

Phil Mickelson, three-time Masters Champion and a strong supporter of the event down the years, said: “I am really excited about moving the Barclays Scottish Open to Castle Stuart Golf Links this year. I know I'm looking forward to testing my game on a strong links course the week before The Open Championship and I'm sure a number of top players from the PGA Tour will be taking advantage of the opportunity. This is set up to be outstanding for the tournament, the players and the fans.”

European Tour Chief Executive George O’Grady said: “It is always exciting to break new ground and everyone at The European Tour is delighted to be staging one of our most prestigious events at a new venue which has been so widely acclaimed.

“Our Members already enjoy competing at Kingsbarns on The European Tour International Schedule and I am sure they will eagerly anticipate testing their skills against the Mark Parsinen-designed course at Castle Stuart. Loch Lomond were extremely courteous and supportive during our negotiations to move forward with the Championship and we will all take away some wonderful memories of our time there and we wish them well in the future.

“This year’s venue might be young, but we are delighted to maintain our strong relationship with Barclays for whom this is the tenth year of its title sponsorship of the event. Such a level of involvement speaks volumes for their overall commitment, not only to The European Tour but to golf worldwide. We congratulate Barclays for the vision in supporting the Barclays Scottish Open at such an outstanding venue for championship golf.”

This will be the tenth year that Barclays has participated as title sponsor and will continue its involvement with The European Tour, a commitment which also extends to its title sponsorship of the Barclays Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club, a co-sanctioned event with the Asian Tour, which was won last November by Australia’s Adam Scott.

As well as the support of Barclays, the tournament has also garnered widespread backing from the public sector agencies in the local area, namely Highland Council, the Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Visit Scotland, Event Scotland and Scottish Development International, all of whom who have pledged their support and assistance.

Ayrshire's Iain Harvey (Kilmarnock Barassie) was elected Junior Vice President of the Scottish Golf Union at the SGU Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 23rd January.

Whilst no outcome was reached a number of points for further consideration were raised, with all areas agreeing that amalgamation was the way forward for golf in Scotland.

All local clubs should now have received correspondence inviting them to attand one of 10 roadshows being set up around the country to discuss the proposed amalgamation. Up to four representatives of each club are invited to attend, with representatives of both mens Area Associations and Ladies Counties also being invited to participate.

The local Ayrshire roadshow is scheduled to be held at Kilmarnock (Barassie) GC on the evening of Monday 21st February.

The Ayrshire Golf Association intend convening a meeting of member clubs some time after the local roadshow, to futher discuss the amalgamation proposals and measure the feeling of member clubs, prior to any EGM of the Scottish Golf Union, to approve or reject any final proposals, which is likely to take place around May 2011.

DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICES - Use of DMD's approved for all Ayrshire County Events in 2011

At the recent meeting of the Ayrshire Golf Association Executive the use of Distance Measuring Devices was discussed and it was agreed to allow the use of Distance Measuring Devices in all Ayrshire Golf Association events in 2011.

This will include the Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships at both mens and boys levels as well as the season long events such as the Fourball, Champion Of Champions and Summer League competitions.

It should be noted that, in keeping with the Rules Of Golf, only devices which measure DISTANCE ONLY are permitted and if any device with a function to measure other factors such as wind speed, temperature or gradient is used, then a player will be liable to disqualification, regardless of whether such a function is actually used by the player.

The following Local Rule will be applicable to all events administered by The Ayrshire Golf Association in 2011 :-

" In all county competitions administered by The Ayrshire Golf Association a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If during a stipulated round a player uses a distance measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g. gradient, windspeed, temperature etc., the player is in breach of rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such function is actually used ".

GALLACHER BOOST TO SCOTLAND SQUAD

(SGU Press Release)

A four-hour session at Kingsfield Golf Centre with European Tour star Stephen Gallacher gave Scotland’s leading amateur golfers a valuable insight into what it takes to make the successful transition to the professional ranks.

Gallacher, who enjoyed a glittering amateur career which saw him win the Scottish match play and stroke play titles as well as the European Amateur Championship, was Scotland’s leading performer in last year’s Race to Dubai and organised the squad get together with national coach Ian Rae at the Linlithgow venue on Friday.

The former Dunhill Links Champion was on hand to pass on his knowledge, experience and advice to thirteen members of the Scotland Men’s Elite Squad, including Troon Welbeck's Michael Stewart,  ahead of getting his 2011 European Tour campaign underway in Abu Dhabi on 20 January.

Stephen Gallacher with the squad, including Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) standing to the left of Stephen Gallacher

The 36-year-old, who won his Tour card at the first attempt back in 1995, was delighted to play a part in mentoring the current squad, many of whom have their sights set on a place in the GB&I Walker Cup side, of which Gallacher was a member of sixteen years ago.

“There have obviously been some significant changes to the way the SGU develops the leading amateur players since I was a member of the squad and they are far more professional in their approach, which is of great benefit,” said Gallacher.

“I was fortunate to receive advice from my uncle (Bernard Gallacher) when I turned professional and I’m delighted that I can help the current players make that transition a little easier. I made some mistakes that I’m sure they can learn from and advice on any aspect on the professional game is invaluable to them, from preparation, travel, management companies and caddies.”

“It’s important they approach the professional game with the correct mindset, believing they can win and not changing what has worked for them as a successful amateur. All the Scottish players on Tour want to see more good young Scots coming through and we’re all on hand to help.” he added.

Gallacher and his wife Helen even prepared lunch for the squad after a visit to his favourite Linlithgow bakers before conducting the seminar at the nearby Kingsfield Golf Centre, to which he is affiliated, and national coach Ian Rae was full of appreciation for his input.

“We’re very grateful to Stephen for the time he spent with the squad and feedback from the players has been fantastic. They got a great insight into life on Tour and could really relate to Stephen, given his record as one of Scotland’s most successful amateur golfers,” said Rae.

“Many of the current squad have ambitions to turn professional over the next few years and its important they pick up as much as they can from players such as Stephen, who has years of experience on the European Tour and want to help the next generation of Scots.”

MACHRIE HOTEL AND GOLF COURSE - Famous Scottish links in administration

(FROM THE HERALDSCOTLAND.COM WEBSITE at http://www.heraldscotland.com/ )

By David Ross, Highland Correspondent

A world-renowned Scottish links golf course and hotel has gone into administration but hopes are high that a new buyer can be found before the start of the vital tourist season.

The Machrie Hotel and Golf Course on Islay is currently closed with 15 of the 18 employees having been made redundant.

The three remaining staff will assist the administrators in looking after the facilities and the maintenance of the golf course.

Machrie is on the south-west of the island, three-and-a-half miles from Port Ellen.

The par-71 course was designed by Willie Campbell, of Musselburgh (pictured right), in 1891 before he emigrated to the US to design other prestigious courses.

When he first saw the land proposed for the course he was reported as saying it was “the best ground for a golf course that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.”

It is one of Scotland’s oldest and most traditional links courses and has been named as one of the top 100 courses in the world, but is often confused with the nine-hole Machrie Bay on Arran.

The hotel and golf course was bought in 2004 by Graham Ferguson Lacey, an Isle of Man-based businessman, and others.

Mr Ferguson Lacey, who also owns the Isle of Man’s largest hotel company and its premier golf club, had plans for a significant expansion for Machrie.

However, it is understood that the economic downturn, along with reports of water supply problems at Machrie, have led to serious financial problems.

Blair Nimmo and Tony Friar of KPMG have been appointed joint administrators of Machrie Hotel and Golf Links Ltd and its associated property company Mendougal 21 Ltd.

Mendougal owns the Machrie Hotel and Golf Course, while Machrie Hotel and Golf Links Ltd operates the hotel and golf course. The group’s assets also include land for further development.

The hotel has 16 bedrooms, 15 separate self-catering lodges and on-site restaurant and retail facilities.

Blair Nimmo said yesterday: “Both the hotel and golf course have excellent reputations and are regarded as destination venues for visitors to Islay. Despite this, Machrie Hotel and Golf Links has unfortunately, like many other companies in the tourism and hospitality sector, been impacted from tightening consumer spending and troubled economic conditions.

“Taking Islay’s prominence as a tourist hot spot into account with its high number of whisky distilleries and other attractions, we are optimistic a buyer will be found for this quite excellent facility.”
